Tattooine

Ever since I could remember I have always felt dusty. No matter how much I scrubbed myself clean of the sand, it seemed the dust in the air of my home planet, Tattooine, clung to me. Like a second skin. That could be why my parents sold me, to escape this horrid planet.

It wasn't easy escaping my owners. But I somehow did. I walked for days to get to the nearest port, Mos Eisley. Where escaping Jawa's and the Hutt's was becoming a daily occurrence, but something inside me led me here. Something inside me was convinced I was worth more than being a slave on this planet for my whole life.

As the days would drag on, for whatever I was meant to do, I picked up on a couple of things. For one, I could make small conversations in multiple languages. It wasn't much, but it did help travelers. They would ask where something was and luckily I could direct them to it. Sometimes even getting spare truguts they had, in return. I was saving up to exchange them in for credits.

Another thing was, I was getting pretty great at thieving. My small hands finding their way into anything I could. I was gaining a little reputation for it among the locals.

In exchange for stealing a power converter or two, I was giving food, a shower, and a bed for a night. That kept me busy.

However, I knew right from wrong. I shouldn't be doing this, but than again, my parents shouldn't have sold me.

I was busy that particular day that my seven-year-old self was saved. I had a list of the locals, that I helped out every once in a while. I would check in with them and see what I could do to get some food. They would give me targets and I would get the stuff.

It wasn't even the middle of the day before I finished my jobs. I carried my bag of stolen goodies and headed to their new owners. I had perfected my walks and runs, little kids were always running around. It just made me seem like I was in a rush to hang out with my friends, it's what all the travelers thought. I had to run past the busy part of the port, I suddenly stopped. I looked to my right and saw two men standing, watching me.

I felt in my bones I could trust them. So, I didn't run when they approached me. One wore a long hooded cape and the other wore a brown vest and looked a little rugged.

The one with the cape bent down to me, "Hi, my name is Luke. What's yours?"

"Nova." I say back to him, now pushing my bag behind me.

"Who are your people Nova?" The other man, standing up, asked me.

If he was talking about my parents, they are long gone by now. They didn't care about me, so why should I use their name?

"I have no people." I put my hand up to my eyes to shield the sun and to also see the rugged man. "I'm just Nova."

"Well now you do, if you want to come with us. I can help you, train you in the force. It is very strong with you, little one." Luke says to me.

Me? Have the Force? No way. But if I go with them, at least I could get off of this miserable planet and go to another one.

I look behind my back, then back to Luke and the other man. "Can I do something really quick?"

"Of course." Luke stands up. I nod at him and run faster than usual. I drop off everything I had stolen that day. I told the locals, food would be enough for payment, not wanting to tip off I was leaving. Once I had emptied my bag, I ran back to the port to see the two men still there.

"Alright, all set," I say to them.

"Let's get out of here." The vest-wearing man said to both of us. Luke reaches down to grab my hand and I let him. It will be easier in case anyone recognizes me, they will think I've been sold to someone else. And not think I was getting off of this planet for free.
