We didn't really celebrate holidays on campus, as far as I can remember, with one distinct exception, and it was a tremendous disaster. After a lackluster Halloween where none of us (besides me, of course) had costumes, we were really hoping for a decent Thanksgiving. Not so much. November rolled around, and an announcement came over the PA by a very enthusiastic professor Why announcing "take your daughter to work day".

The general consensus was as follows: Nobody had a daughter, except possibly Sonya since her answer was only correct 50% of the time and we could not be completely sure. Therefore, the only people with any vested interest were those who had a parent on the school staff... which literally only consisted of October. As the day grew closer and closer, decorations piled up in areas to an absurd degree. There was even a large billboard constructed in the tiny town of New New Mexico announcing the event, which was also useless since there was almost no population to this tiny town, and the locals had their own jobs to attend to like... I don't know, surviving the endless night that was northern Alaskan winter. The auroras were not enough to make up for not seeing the sun. It was just dark and lit by disappointing lights, ever growing in the celebration of "Take your daughter to work day". Heroes were slated to make appearances, and I couldn't figure out why at all.

Ivan came back to school as usual the day after our impromptu dinner with October, and when we received the news blasted into our minds, our reaction was a mix of disinterest and confusion. The school had been posting "take your daughter to work day" news for months. October and Ivan let out an audible groan each. October was probably embarrassed about her dad's attention, and Ivan obviously disliked the professor, so there wasn't any real surprise there. The only really excited person, oddly enough, was Summer. Her parents were famous celebrities in Hollywood, so I was shocked to hear that she had any given plans for "take your daughter to work day." Sonya informed me that I shouldn't worry, however, and I trusted her implicitly because I needed that false vote of confidence.

The decorations grew and the school became a mess of bright pink and purple banners, and the legendary "take your daughter to work day" arrived, and immediately I was made aware how unprepared I was for the rigors of take your daughter to work day. Summer was not alone... but she wasn't with her parents either. Allycard, in her best bright white suit was accompanying Summer to school.

"Hey! Summer!" I yelled, rushing over. I had grown much less nervous around her lately, which to me made it seem like I was just stepping into my cool phase. "Are you looking for Allycard's secret daughter or something?"

Summer laughed. "Nah." She replied, "but almost nobody has a daughter, so the league decided that it's a good time to show off sidekicks. A bunch of our classmates are "daughters for the day".

This was very serious. The league of heroes was here, and I had yet to cement myself as anyone's daughter for the day. Code red. CODE RED!

I said a polite goodbye and rushed inside to see the damage... it was worse than I thought.

Bearbot 3000 had already arrived and selected Clint as his sidekick. I didn't know Clint very well, but he was circling around Bearbot getting a real good look at the nuts and bolts therein. Bearbot was like the second most successful superhero and he chose that spaz? What a mess!

Dennis had been selected! I mean, he had been selected by Cupid, who was an overweight and very hairy man wearing angel wings and a diaper... but still! Cupid was famously quite accurate with his love arrows, and to see Dennis be Cupid's daughter for the day filled me up with disgust.

Arthur had been selected by the Incredible Whatever, The Crusher was searching for Guy, Craig the Super Zookeeper was trying to persuade Rob and Venus on the benefits of giant tofu, Jetstream was carrying Claudia around like a balloon, and Sonya was telling the fortunes of a very gullible Grim Reaper. His dark shroud shrieked with new delight at every prediction of his own death. It seemed like he was having fun, as was Sonya... and why wouldn't they? They got to go to take your daughter to work day with a superhero! I assume Guy was somewhere, but I mean... who can actually keep track of that guy?
