I found Chase caught on a bush, his once beautiful brown fur was now mud-covered and stained with dirt. He yelped as I came near him,
"Avalanche! Avalanche, help me! Help me! I'm caught on the bush! My paw..."
I raced over to his back paw, the one intertwined in the branches, fur and tree merging. I poked it with my paw and he screamed,
"Ow!"
I shook my head in dismay,
"You need help. Help I can't give you. You need medical attention. I'll go get Mom."
Chase asked,
"What? You can't just leave me! I'm hurt!"
I thought for a second, Maybe she's still in the truck. I howled, loud enough for her to hear me, or at least I thought. I was right, she heard me howl, and yelled,
"Avalanche! Keep talking! I'm coming!"
I heard her footsteps approach and kept on.
When she finally arrived, Chase was elated. So much so he forgot he was hurt and stuck, and tried to run to Abby but was brought back to the shocking realization that he was stuck. The branch snapped him back forcefully.
"Hold on, I got you."
I stayed back with him as he whimpered, the pain must have been intense!
"Don't worry Chase..." I said, at least to comfort him. Abby came back from her truck with a pair of large pliers.
"Oh, finally,"
Chase whimpered with a relived tone. She quickly started to cut the limbs of the bush, freeing him.
"Ah, I feel a little better now, but my paw still hurts like hell."
Abby whispered,
"Oh, God! We've gotta get you to the animal hospital! Your paw, Chase, your paw! It's, it's covered in blood and mud!"
She grabbed him by the collar and hugged him roughly. She then stood up and walked off a little, then called him. Chase came obediently. Limping diligently over to her, he stopped at her feet and his injured back paw hung limply. She asked,
"Can you walk back to the truck?"
Despite his breathtaking pain, Chase nodded and barked as loud as he could. I went up to him and asked,
"Do you need any help walking back?"
Chase answered though bare teeth,
"Yeah."
I barked,
"Here, lean on me," as I offered up my side. He gladly bore his fur into mine. In an instant, I remembered how Eagle used to do that and it brought a tear to my eye and a deep pain in my heart. Chase didn't notice my inner turmoil as he was in too much pain to care.
I walked slowly with him, all the way to the awaiting truck, which was to serve as Chase's emergency vehicle. They don't exactly have animal ambulances down here in Georgia. Abby saw us making our way over to her. I knew Chase wouldn't be able to get in her lifted ass truck without help from Abby. Just as I suspected, Abby had to carefully pick Chase up and put him in the bed. She knew he'd be safe back there, and he could move his leg, if he wanted to.
"Are you gonna be okay, Chase?"
I ask him worriedly.
"I- I don't know." He admits.
I feel bad for all the pain he's going through with his injured paw. How are we going to be playmates now? It was getting dark and Chase had already fallen asleep a few minutes earlier. Then, I myself was beginning to get sleepy. My eyes were getting heavier and heavier, I was struggling to keep myself awake.
