"Chase! Chase? Where are you?"
Chase was nowhere to be found downstairs, so I went up. Upstairs, I searched all the rooms, including Abby's bedroom, the guest room, and the bathrooms. I found nothing. No Chase. Well, now I trekked back down and went out to the backyard after asking to be let out. I sniffed the air, trying to draw in Chase's scent. Before I could attempt another sniff, something caught my eye, a brown pelt. Out the corner of my eye, I saw movement, but none the likes of which were wolf like. This movement was far too sparatic and frantic. I dropped my body low, tensed my muscles, fluffed up my fur, ready for a fight. I realized it was a squirrel and silently laughed to myself, Wow, really? It's a damn squirrel. Then, I went after it, chasing it around, desperate for a fresh kill. I'd been eating kibble while I shacked up here, and was very tired of the same old crap day after day. As I got closer, the squirrel's tail twitched wildly. I finished it off with one clean blow to the chest and dug into my well-deserved meal. A few minutes after I'd eaten every last morsel, I went back to looking for Chase. I sniffed the whole outside and found no trace of Chase anywhere.
I ran back in the house and barked. Abby came over to me, and I barked again. She said,
"What's wrong with you?"
I barked and barked. My bark was very loud and powerful. Abby asked again,
"What's biting ya?"
I cast a glance at Chase's leash and darted my eyes from her to the leash. She finally understood,
"Are you trying to tell me you wanna go out? Or is, wait, where's Chase?"
I howled in answer as if to say "there ya go, now you're getting it."
She yelled,
"Chase" very loudly and then set off.
"Come on, Avalanche!"
I listened to her and she grabbed my leash and Chase's leash and we left out the door. We loaded up in the truck and drove off. By now, I knew what a ride meant. Calling out the window that was rolled down, Abby yelled,
"Chase! Chase! Come here, boy!" She parked the truck when we got to a park and leapt out. She turned me loose and held up Chase's leash toward me, I sniffed it. She promoted,
"Catch the scent girl, catch the scent!"
I smelled the ground, and picked up on a familiar scent, Chase. I had his scent and was hot on his trail. I barked every so often while Abby followed close behind. I wasn't on a leash, she'd turned me completely loose. I knew not to run off or nothing, and I followed Chase's trail. I missed my adopted brother, who was a much better brother to me then my blood brother, and I would find him.
After a two hour search, we turned up nothing. No Chase. We went back to the truck, unhappy. We went around town, calling his name. When finally, I saw movement out of the corner of my eye and barked. Abby jumped back, and looked at me after stopping the truck.
"Why'd you bark?"
I answered with another bark. I saw what looked to be Chase's fur back there. She opened the door and let me out. I follow my instincts, and eyes.
