"He's drunk." Her mom huffed, "Just a drunk with a little road rage." She begged her to stop, begged her to call for help. "It's fine," her aunt assured her, "Nothing's going to happen."
Still she couldn't shake the uneasy feeling in her gut. Drunks weren't as steady as he was. He was heading right for them. Full speed and fully planned. She yelled once more in desperation, "Mom, please turn the car around!"
The sudden impact forced her head against the back of her rattling seat, she clenched the armrest with such a force that her nails broke.
Perspiration soaked her brow, seeping into her eyes. Their fate was set. She knew it as surely as she knew she'd seen her last sunset.
Ringing. Constant ringing. Her ears felt like they might bleed. She was having a hard time facing the reality. She struggled to free herself from the impacted metal. The moment she freed herself from her entrapment is when it hit her.
"No, no! Get out! You've got to get out!" She called to the other passenger and driver. No response. She nearly fell over, dizzy. Her head was spinning and ached. The smell of fuel leaking from the car didn't help the situation much. She had to cover her nose in order to breathe properly. She yelled for help.
The pain, too much for her to bear. Before she could even take a step further to find help, she fell to ground.
Sirens pierced through the ringing in her ears, red and blue lights flooded the night sky. A sudden blast of sound and heat burning her skin as the vehicle exploded.
She cringed and screamed. Her voice masked by the blast from the explosion and the sirens. She watched as the flames rose higher and higher. Realizing she was the sole survivor. Realizing she was the only one that knew...
She drifted in and out of a haze, the rising smoke blurring her vision. She saw the shimmer of a policemen's badge. She knew that face. It was her brother's friend. He knelt beside her and lifted her head, "Oh, Señorita Teresa...Don't worry! You'll be okay. You'll be okay..."
