Georgie's due date was in 3 weeks. Marie's was in 8 weeks. The house was full of hormones, Georgie hadn't had an easy pregnancy she had been stressed, in and out of hospital with severe cramping and bruised ribs from being kicked inside out however Marie hadn't had a thing go wrong. Georgie was in the living room with her mum laying on the sofa, Elvis was at work he was due to be home any minute. Georgie kept squirming she couldn't get comfortable "you alright George?" She asked Georgie nodded "these fucking cramps are killing me" she cried he mum just held her close "you haven't got long left baby" she said holding her head to her chest. "I'm going to go and get you a hot water bottle, you lay here alright?" She said Georgie just clasped her stomach as her mum walked into the kitchen. "I think I'm going to take her up the hospital, she's really not right, she shouldn't be in this much pain" Grace said standing with Marie "I feel so bad for her, she's always so strong for all of us" Marie said Grace nodded "that's what worries me, she's always so strong and she's crumbling under the pain Marie" she said Marie nodded "take her up the hospital, it can't hurt" she said grace nodded and walked back in with the hot water bottle "try this Georgie" she said putting it right under her bump, Georgie held it to her stomach and Grace just stroked her head "it's going to be alright darling" she said Georgie nodded tears in her eyes.
"Mum" Georgie said minutes later "what's wrong honey?" She asked "I've just felt something" she said "felt what?" Grace asked Georgie sat up and stood up looking at the sofa "I'm bleeding mum" she cried "it's alright George, it's alright just stay calm, I'm ringing for an ambulance" she said Georgie just cried and her mum held her in one arm. Marie walked in and saw the blood on Georgie's trousers and on the sofa and took her into her arms while her mum was on the phone. "We're going to take you to the hospital come on George" her mum said Marie helped Georgie to the car and got in the back with her whilst her mum drove to hospital. They got seen to straight away and did an ultrasound and endless tests.
After hours of waiting a nurse walked over to Georgie who was almost asleep on the bed. "We have some news Georgie" she said "that doesn't sound good" she said weakly "I've lost it haven't I?" She asked the nurse sat down on her bed "no, no baby's still there but it was very close" she said "what do you mean?" She asked "you have what we call placental abruption, it's where the placenta comes away from the uterus, it can starve baby of oxygen" she said Georgie's eyes filled with tears and the nurse held her hand "we would normally keep you in and on bed rest but considering you are so far gone already, we would like to deliver baby today" she said "today?" Georgie asked she nodded "you've lost a lot of blood Georgie, were as worried about you are we are baby" she said Georgie was as white as a sheet "you're still bleeding now, you're losing strength to fight and you're not going to be able to give birth without strength because believe me it takes a lot of it" she said Georgie nodded her eyes half closed "the easiest option for you is a c section, but we can try a vaginal delivery if you want to" she said "what are the risks?" She asked "minimal for baby, but you could lose a lot of blood" she said Georgie looked at her mum who was holding her hand "what do I do mum?" She cried "whatever you want honey" she said sitting down next to her "you can have a couple of minutes to discuss it and call your partner, I'll be back in a moment to set up a blood transfusion" she said Georgie nodded overwhelmed as she headed out.
"Elvis is on his way honey" Grace said Georgie nodded "I can't give birth like this, she's right, I don't have the strength to sit up let alone give birth" she said "having a c section would be better Georgie" she said "and I know what you're thinking, longer off work" she said "they might not take me back mum, I have to do this normally" she said Grace nodded "then that's what we will do" she smiled Georgie nodded and the nurse walked back in and set up the blood transfusion. The door opened and Elvis walked in "Georgie" he said holding her hand "I'm alright" she said weakly "everything's going to be alright Elvis" Grace said he nodded "the army, they won't take me back, not after a c section, will they?" Georgie asked Elvis "they might do" he smiled "that's not good enough. They have to, I'm going to do this normally" she said looking at the nurse "alright lovely" she smiled.
After the blood transfusion had started to work the nurse walked back in "right then, let's get this baby on the way" she smiled Georgie just held Elvis's hand tighter "I've got you" he said she nodded and the nurse got everything ready to induce her. "Right this shouldn't hurt Georgie just a little uncomfortable alright" she said Georgie nodded looking up at the ceiling as the midwife performed a cervical sweep. "I don't think this is going to do the trick Georgie" she smiled "what does that mean?" She asked "we're going to give you a gel in the vagina to start the contractions this should only be uncomfortable for a moment" she said Georgie nodded and held Elvis "right now we wait" she smiled.
After 3 hours of waiting Georgie was crippled over in pain. "It's alright George. You can do this" Elvis said she shook her head crying into her hands "I don't think I can, I can't do this Elvis" she cried "yes, yes you can" he said pushing her hair back "no I really can't, this 9 months has given me nothing but grief all I've been through is shit loads of agony, giving up the thing I love doing most and what do I get out of it? Being a fucking shit mum" she cried "you aren't going to be a shit mum" he said she nodded "yes I am. Why can't I just have a normal life, everything always has to be so complicated" she cried "let me" her mum said Elvis had tears in his eyes he hated seeing her like this "Georgie, Georgie sweetheart listen to me, I know your job is your life but you need to forget about it, we can sort your job after this baby is born but if you keep hanging about this baby could die and you could die and even if right now you dying is the last thing on your mind, it's the first thing on our minds, we don't want to lose you Georgie" she said Georgie nodded struggling to breathe with how much she had been crying "now calm down, and take a breath and just be brave, then you can cry all you like" she said Georgie nodded and her mum held her face in her hands "I love you sweetheart, so so much" she said Georgie just closed her eyes holding her mums hand to her face "I can't do this mum" she said calmer now "I think you should let them take you to theatre Georgie" she said still holding her face "I don't want to mum" she cried shaking her head "it's your choice but the safest thing for you and for baby is to have a c section" she said "I know" she said "what's wrong George, why really don't you want to do this?" She asked "honestly I've told you the truth, I want to go back to work, I want my life back, I can't be a mum" she cried "I'm scared" she cried "let them go and deliver this baby Georgie, you will go back to the army, of course they'll take you back, you're the best medic the British army has" she said "you know, I delivered a baby once, me and Mimi" she said "I thought it looked so difficult, so painful" she said "but she made it look easy" she added "Georgie you're bleeding, you're getting weaker by the minute, you need to let them take you to theatre, however much you say you don't want to be a mum, you love this baby because you walked out of that abortion clinic and wanted to keep it, please Georgie, don't do this for you, do this for us, we need you. Elvis wants to marry you and your dad he wants to walk you down the aisle, don't you want to see Marie's baby born?" she said Georgie nodded "alright?" She asked Georgie nodded "okay" she said "right, take her before she changes her mind" Grace said. They prepped her for theatre and took her through "I love you Georgie" Elvis said as they pushed her to the operating room. They sat outside when a doctor walked out with a baby in his arms "you've got a daughter" he smiled passing her to Elvis "a daughter?" Elvis smiled holding her close "is Georgie alright?" He asked "she has lost a lot of blood but I think she's going to be alright" he said Elvis nodded "as long as George is okay" he said looking at his little girl "your mummy is going to come round I promise" he said holding her hand "she loves you so much, you've just got to give her some time" he said cradling the baby "you look like a natural" the doctor smiled "I've already got one" he smiled "Georgie hasn't got another baby has she?" He asked "no, no this is her first" he said smiling at the doctor. "Right Georgie will be out of surgery in a minute you'll be able to see her" he smiled Elvis nodded "the army will take her back won't they?" He asked "honestly I don't know, you'll have to speak to them" he said Elvis nodded "have I got 5 minutes to ring them?" He asked the doctor nodded and took the baby back as Elvis walked outside "hi Charlie, I'm just ringing to say Georgie's had the baby" he said "she's had it?" He asked Elvis nodded "Charlie she's been through hell, she had to have a c section in the end" he said "a c section?" He asked Elvis nodded "you need to take her back Charlie, I'm going to take paternity leave" Elvis said "Elvis you know the rules after a cesarian" he said "you don't understand Charlie, it was the last thing she wanted, just give her the chance to prove herself when she's able to" he said "I'll do my best to convince them to give you a ring but 2 years is the rule Elvis" he said "they don't even have to know, just let her come back after maternity leave" he said "you know that can't happen, she's got it on her medical records" he said Elvis just put his hand to his head "I just want her to be happy Charlie and she's not happy" he almost cried "don't you worry Elvis we will sort her out" he said he nodded "I better go, she'll be out of surgery soon" he said Charlie nodded "don't let her worry, tell her I'll do everything I can" he said Elvis nodded "thank you" he said shutting off the phone.
