Part  1 - The Rain

It is pouring outside. We all want it to snow, but it won’t. It started as a drizzle, and slowly turned stronger, and now it is pouring. It is January, and there has been no snow yet this entire winter.

Emily shut her diary and hid in her closet. She had to, or else her older brother, Jake, would find out and read it. No one knew she had it. It was a private thing.  Emily looked out her window. Still raining. She sighed, wishing for the sun or snow. But the rain just kept pouring down.

“Well,” she said to herself, “ Maybe it will get colder and the rain will freeze.” But she knew it was very unlikely. Emily went downstairs and turned the TV on. She flicked through the channels until she reached the weather channel. The weatherman began to speak.

“Well, folks, now you might only have rain, but there is a storm coming. A huge one. Almost a hurricane. So gather supplies now while it’s only a harmless drizzle.” Emily sat straight up.

“Mom!” She called. “MOM!”  Her mother came into the room.

“What, Emily?”

“There is a huge storm coming. We have to get ready. Now.” She pointed at the TV, which was showing exactly how bad this storm was going to be. Her mom looked shocked.

“Emily, I’m going to go out to get supplies. Shane is taking a nap. Be careful. Watch over Shane, in case he wakes up. Just give him his teddy. He loves it. All babies love their teddies. Jake is at a friend’s house, he’ll be okay.”

“Mom,” Emily began.

“Emily, I’ll come home as soon as possible. Good-bye!” said Emily’s mother.

“Good luck!” said Emily, closing the door after her mom.
