The wind howled. Trees shook. Rain pelted on their windows.

“Mom…” Emily said, near tears.
Shane was crying. He wailed, as Emily’s mom tried to calm him down. Emily began to cry too.

Just then, a huge crash shook the house. Peeping out of the tiny window, Emily saw that a tree had fallen. It fell away from the house, because they were lucky that time.

“Emily, what was it?” Her mom exclaimed, worried. Emily turned back to face her.

“A tree, Mom. A tree, it fell. Away from the house, we were lucky, but…”

She didn’t say what she thought. That next time, they might not be so lucky. And that others would not be so lucky.

The wind howled loudly, running around the house. Shane began to cry, so Emily quickly started playing a silly cartoon on the TV. Emily’s mom gave a weak smile and sang along weakly to try and comfort her son. Emily joined in, and little Shane laughed, waving his hands.

For a moment, everything felt okay. The wind was only in the distance, howling. The hurricane was forgotten, for a moment of bliss.

And that’s when the power went out.
