"Hey Y/N, we're all going for drinks later I wanted to ask-"

I jumped from the sudden ringing from the phone on my desk.

My eyes watched it intently waiting for it to stop ringing.

"Aren't you going to answer that?" My co-worker Kendra questioned.

Luckily, it stopped ringing before I could come up with a lie.

"Sorry, what were you saying?" I said facing her fully again.

"I was saying later-" the phone cut Kendra again and I slightly huffed.

I waited for it to ring again and Kendra spoke up, "The phone." she motioned to it.

I knew who it was and I didn't want to pick it up.

My hand slowly picked up the phone and I place it to my ear carefully listening.

"Hello, Y/N speaking."

Silence.

"Hello..."

He was on the other end, listening, breathing, waiting.

He still refused to speak, the way he always did.

I place it back down and pursed my lips.

If Kendra wasn't there, I would of shouted at him to leave me alone or wept bitter tears.

"It's nobody, just the wrong number." I shook my head.

"Would you like to come with us for drinks later?"

"I would but I'm drained, I got a lot of work to catch up on."

"Alright, another time?"

"Yeah, for sure."

The phone rang again and Kendra smiled at me wearily, "I'll see you later. Have a nice rest of the day." she said before turning around and going back to her seat.

I picked up the phone harshly speaking into it, "What?"

"That's a new way to pick up the phone." my mom said.
