I expected the rescue mission to happen early in the morning, but it ended up being postponed until that night. It was the longest I'd ever had to wait for anything.
I pulled my jacket and mask on and made my way out to the garages. Harry, Tobi, and Vik were all waiting by the jeeps, and JJ was somewhere talking to the other volunteers.
"You guys ready for this?" I pulled my arms together in an attempt to keep warm.
"I mean, we lived there for five years. I think we'll be okay," Tobi nudged Vik, who nodded then looked back down at his hands.
We stood in silence until JJ came over, blowing out a nervous laugh and patting me on the shoulder. "I think we should go."
I slung my rifle over my shoulder and nodded, sliding into the driver's seat of the jeep and waiting for the others to get in. I turned the ignition and pulled away, making sure the other jeeps followed.
It was about a two and half hour drive to the stopping point, where we parked and walked the rest of the way into the city. There wasn't much of a patrol out, which concerned me. We were able to make it all the way to the base without being spotted.
"Okay, Team A will go in through the front, causing a distraction for Team B. We will go around the back and work our way in, hopefully undetected. When we get there, I'm sending two people to search for Simon. The rest of us will place explosives all around the interior. Understand?"
The group nodded and split off. Tobi, Vik, Harry, me, and two others followed JJ around the large fence, careful to sneak past stray guards. As soon as gunshots sounded, we followed JJ through one of the cracked windows.
"Okay," He kneeled down and handed me a walkie talkie. "Ethan, take Harry and try to find Simon and the girl."
"Cara," I corrected. I didn't know her too well, but we had talked occasionally and she seemed pretty cool.
"Right. You two find her, and the rest of us will start going around the building."
"What?" Vik spoke up. "No. I should get to go."
"Look, I understand it's your sister or whatever, but I need you here with me," JJ swung his rifle around so it was resting in his hands. "Ethan and Harry are capable. You need to trust me on this."
He looked from JJ to me, and I nodded. He sighed.
"We'll meet back outside, past the gates. Then we'll blow it to hell."
He stood and motioned for the others to follow, so I nodded to Harry and we went the opposite way, wandering through the halls. Red lights were flashing, and an alarm was loudly going off.I opened countless doors, and was met with mostly empty rooms. A few of them had soldiers in them, which were easy to take out since they were caught off guard.
After what felt like hours of searching, we were starting to get worried. Were we too late?
I opened one of the doors and was met with bright white lights instead of flashing red ones. There was a giant glass chamber with a door, and there were some spots of blood on the floor.
"What the hell happened here?" Harry asked.
I shrugged, refusing to think the worst.
After a few more doors, we found one that was locked. I turned to Harry and he nodded, so I lifted my gun and aimed it at the lock.
I fired at it and pulled the handle, letting the door wing open.
I pointed my gun inside, the flashing red lights making it hard to see. I sighed when I thought it was empty, but turned and looked down.
"Ethan?"
