I sat in the truck, putting my head in my hands and glancing at her. She was limp, and she was laying down on the back seat. She wore a red dress, which worried me. Why was she wearing a dress? These guys...wouldn't take kindly to that. She was exposed. Her face was bruised badly. Her lip was cut, and she had a blue circle around her eye.
And it was all my fault.
I couldn't take my eyes off of her. I wanted to do anything I could to keep her safe, but I knew there was nothing I could do. There was nothing any of us could do.
And to think, for the shortest amount of time, I thought maybe there was more to life. Like maybe I could be one of the rebels. I could fight for freedom and keep people safe.
But dreams die. I had to accept that this was the only way to live.
"Josh. Josh. Bradley!" I looked up, having heard my last name for the first time in a while. A recruit I didn't recognize motioned to Cara, then to the truck ahead. "When we get there, you and Wilson are taking the prisoners to the holding cell. Officer Gordon wants a word with them."
I nodded, looking over through the window. I wondered what Simon would say when he saw me. Maybe they'd knocked him out, like they did Cara. I prayed that Cara didn't wake up. I didn't want her to see me like this.
We sat in silence and I looked out the window, recognizing the buildings as we drove past them. Eventually, we pulled into the loading area, causing my stomach to drop. I hated seeing this place. I hated myself for coming back.
We parked, and I let the door swing open as I took one more look at Cara. I lifted her into my arms and pulled her out of the truck, at the same time Wilson dragged Simon out of the other one.
He was definitely awake.
He struggled against the cuffs, his mask barely muffling his shouts.
"Let go of me! Where is she? Hey, I'm talking to you—" He turned and immediately stopped yelling. It must have been the red of the dress that caught his eye.
His eyes widened, then he glared at me.
"I knew it. You're a traitor! We trusted you...she trusted you! You're—"
I turned away from him, refusing to look at him being dragged away. Instead, I looked down at her face. I couldn't look for long, though. She was beat up pretty bad, and it hurt me to imagine what had happened.I followed far behind Wilson, to the point where I could only barely hear Simon yelling. I heard Wilson threaten to knock him out if he kept yelling, but that only worked for a second.
Jesus, dude. I know you guys talk or whatever, but I've known her way longer than you.
Except I had no right to think that. I'd tried my best to avoid her after I'd turned on my locator. She'd probably needed someone to talk to after Tobi had gotten sick.
Wilson chained Simon's cuffs to a lock on the floor in the room, after pulling off his mask. I looked around to try and find another one. It was a small room; only about the length of three men laying down on either side. The only other lock was across from Simon.
I avoided his gaze as I set Cara on the ground. I put her arms around her back and put her hands in cuffs, making sure not to do it too tight. She'd suffered enough. I then locked her cuffs onto the floor, making sure she was able to sit up when she woke up.
I was surprised by Simon's silence. But as I thought it, he spoke. Calmly, this time.
"I bet you're happy with yourself. How long has it been a trick? Since you met her? I heard her confide in you about her parents. You just put on a face this whole time, didn't you?"
I glanced around. Wilson was gone, but there were cameras in the room.
There was nothing I could do.
I took one last glance at Cara. She was shifting in her sleep, and mumbling something. "Get off of me." I heard her say. She looked like she was going to cry.
I couldn't stomach it anymore. I didn't even have the decency to wake her up. I just stood and walked out of the room, not looking back.
I closed the door and walked straight to my sleeping quarters. These rooms actually had doors, so I closed mine behind me.
I face planted into my pillow, refusing to let the tears come. Though I felt awful, it was the only way to be safe. It was the only way to keep her alive.
I kept telling myself I was doing the right thing. They would have killed everyone if I hadn't done what I did. It still hurt, though. I ruined any possibility I had of a real friendship.
"Josh," Officer Gordon barged into my room, causing me to sit up.
"Yes, sir?"
"I need you to watch the security cameras. Let me know if she wakes up. It's her we need, not him. In fact, I've got the perfect torture idea in mind that I need to work on."
I had to keep myself from wincing. Was he going to torture her, or Simon? "Uh, yes sir."I stood up and walked past him out of my room, making my way to the video room. Of course it had to be me. The only one in this building that couldn't do it.
I sat in the empty room, glancing at the cameras. I turned up the audio to the room they were in, and set my elbow on the table.
Simon was leaning with his head against the wall, looking at Cara. I heard a small noise, so I turned it up. My heart sank.
He was humming the song that I constantly heard Cara hum. She wasn't tossing and turning anymore, but he continued to hum the song. He switched from humming to whistling the tune, so I assumed he didn't know the lyrics. He didn't take his eyes off of her.
Congratulations, you got her to stop having a nightmare. Big deal.
I sat and waited for something to happen. Eventually, the whistling died down, and he laid down in a similar position that Cara was laying in. He faced her, then tried and failed to turn away.
I glanced at her figure on the screen. She looked so peaceful, but cold in the short dress she was wearing. I wanted nothing more than to wrap a jacket around her.
Simon seemed to notice, too, and tried taking off his own suit jacket. He obviously failed, though.
I sighed.
This is going to haunt me forever.
I wasn't sure how to go about Josh's point of view, after him admitting he was a traitor and all. I hope I did it in a decent way.
