I had left the party to go back to the garages. But what I saw when I got out there stopped me dead in my tracks. I didn't want to believe it, but sure enough, it was Valestein soldiers.
Oh God.
They were loading Simon and Cara into separate trucks. Cara was unconscious, but Simon was yelling and fighting, trying to get to her.
"Oh no no no—" I ran down to the entrance, past the guards and straight to JJ's office.
"What the hell?" JJ stood up when he saw me. "What happened?"
"Valesteins. They got Simon and Cara."
"They what?" He pushed past me, and through the crowd that was now gathering at the door. They must have heard the commotion and wanted to know what was happening.
I followed him as he made his way to Ethan's room.
Ethan stood as he barged in. "What did I tell you about keeping an eye on Simon?"
"What do you mean? Last I saw he was dancing at the party."
"Well, clearly he isn't anymore," JJ started to raise his voice. "He ran out with that damn girl, went against my orders, and got them both captured! Now, that doesn't sound like dancing to me, does it?"
"They got captured?" Ethan clenched his fists, a guilty look on his face. I knew how much this must have hurt him. Simon was like a brother to him. I couldn't imagine how painful that sentence was.JJ sighed. "Now I have to explain all this to everyone. Simon's been going against orders, the girl got herself captured, Tobi's sick, and that Josh guy is nowhere to be seen. Ever since they came here, it's all gone to shit. I have to postpone our London trip until we can plan out how to not only rescue Simon, but blow the place to pieces."
JJ stormed out of the cell, pushing past someone and nearly knocking them down."It's not true, is it?" Ethan and I both turned around at the familiar voice. Vik, Cara's brother, stood at the doorway. I couldn't read the look on his face, but his hands were clenched, similar to Ethan's. "Tell me she's not gone."
I turned to Ethan, who looked down at his feet. The hurt look in Vik's eyes finally showed. He looked down at his feet as well."What have I done? I shouldn't have said that to her," He put his palms on his face and stood there. He then walked away.
"Look," I put my hand on Ethan's shoulder. "We'll get him back. It'll be okay."
"What are they going to do with him?" He looked into my eyes. "He's not immune like she is. They're going to torture him for information. Or they're going to kill him. We can't postpone the mission. It'll be too late."
He pushed past me and out the door, probably to meet up with Emily. It was rare that she wasn't at his side, especially when Simon wasn't around.
JJ called an emergency meeting, so we all filed into the cafeteria. Natalie and him were debating next to where the microphone was set up. She motioned for him to walk up to the microphone, so he did.
"I know you're probably wondering what happened tonight, and what our next actions will be. The news I have for you is that two of our own have been captured, less than a mile away from here. I'm ordering a full lockdown until we can come up with a rescue team. That means I am closing off the entire west sector, and I think it's pretty clear that there should be no going outside. It is to remain this way until I say otherwise."
Instead of closing it like he normally would, he just walked away. An uproar of questions filled the room, but JJ ignored them. He grabbed Natalie's hand and dragged her into the kitchen, leaving a group of very confused people.
Vik walked up to me and Ethan, an angry look on his face. "I know who did this."
Ethan laughed a fake laugh. "Uh, yeah, we all do. That doesn't change anything."
Vik shook his head. "No. Someone sold out our location. I know who it was. I should have figured it out sooner, but I didn't.""Oh yeah? Who was it, then?" I punched Ethan in the arm after he said it. Just because he was upset, it didn't mean he had to be rude. Vik was in the same boat he was.
"The guy that came with me. Josh. God, how could I have been so ignorant?"
"Josh? Why do you think that?" I asked."He was a former Valestein soldier, he magically disappeared, and I found this under his pillow this morning."
He pulled out a walkie talkie from his pocket, shoving it in Ethan's hand and then running a hand through his hair.
"Surely you're wrong. Simon would have figured it out. He was meant to be keeping a close eye on you guys," I glanced at the device, still sitting in Ethan's hand.
Surely it wasn't an inside job.
Was it?
As you can see, I changed the direction of the story entirely. That way there's more plot AND it's a much longer story.
