Note: Janus is aromantic and polyamorous in this. Roman is monogamous and alloromantic

It had started innocent enough. Roman and Janus had started a queerplatonic relationship a few months ago. There was a lot of confusion around the subject. Janus didn't really know how to explain it and Roman was new to the concept of strong platonic love. There was a lot of fumbling around, but eventually they arrived at the understanding that it was somewhere between friends and dating. For a few months, it worked out.

But then the trouble started. It started out as a simple conversation about Roman and Thomas's relationship. The two had been dating for just over a year. One day, Roman began talking about Thomas and how wonderful he was, rambling on and on. Janus was okay with this, making a passing comment that with how Roman described Thomas, he just might try to seduce him into being queerplatonic partners with him, too. That was when it all started crumbling.

Roman had made an offended scoff and proclaimed that Thomas was his, not anyone else's. Janus laughed it off, trying to contain his awkwardness at the fact that Roman was being possessive over someone else.

"Okay, I get it, Ro," he laughed. Roman hummed.

"And again: he's mine," he said. Janus' laughter died off, a slightly sick feeling swirling in his chest. He cleared his throat and shifted uncomfortably. Roman seemed to notice and made to reassure him. "Hey, you're mine, too." Janus nodded, the feeling not dissipating in the slightest. He feined being fine though and they continued conversation. Again, it steered in the direction of Roman and Thomas. Jealousy swirled in Janus until he laughed another side comment that toppled everything.

"Wow, I guess I'm a bit jealous for you," he chuckled bitterly. Roman blinked at him.

     "What? You mean of me?"

Janus shook his head. "No, I'm jealous that you're so in love with Thomas and that he seems to have all of your attention." Roman hummed in understanding and wrapped his arms around Janus.

"Well, I still wanna platonically cuddle you and talk to you," he said. Janus bristled, then slumped against the couch. He ran his hands through his hair, frustrated.

"Why does it feel like I'm your second choice?" Janus asked. Roman made a confused noise.

"You're not. There's no hierarchy to my feelings. Some are just stronger," he explained. Janus's heart sunk.

"So they are stronger. Your feelings for Thomas, I mean," Janus said. Roman shook his head.

"Thomas is my soulmate. If course I feel slightly more for him."

Janus looked away. Roman was confirming all of his worst fears. That even if he does manage to have someone care for him, they won't care as much as they would if it was a romantic relationship.

"So do I not have a soulmate?" Janus knew the question was unfair. He knew that it would prompt Roman to defend him. And oh, how much he wanted Roman to fight for him.

"Of course you do! Just a platonic one," Roman said as if on cue. It somehow didn't make Janus feel any better. All of those insecurities came crashing down on him.
