"Okay, I want new school year resolutions. Go!" I shout whilst walking to the dungeons with a full stomach, Reggie and Sev on either side of me.
"We do this every single year," complains the sixth year on my left. "And every single year we never follow through."
I scoff at his unwillingness. "I don't know what you mean."
Reg chuckles from the other side of me. "Last year you promised to stop getting into duels and losing your temper, Severus said he'd capture Lily's heart and I swore that I'd improve my relationship with Sirius. Look at how well that turned out for all of us."
"Okay okay, maybe we don't have a one hundred percent success rate, but it's the thought that counts," I try to reason. I link arms with both boys and jut out my bottom lip. "This year let's focus more on things that we can actually control."
"Fine," they both say in unison, not sounding at all pleased.
"I'll start," announces Sev. "This year I want to work on creating new potions and spells."
I nod proudly at him as Reggie begins to speak. "This year I'll make more friends in my own year group. I mean I love the both of you but in classes I'm usually sitting beside someone without much to say."
"That's a good one." Both of them turn to me as we make our way around the last corner before the Slytherin common room. "This year I promise to try to be kinder to others and to lead the Slytherin quidditch team to victory." They both give a cheer and just as we reach the door I hear quiet sniffling. "Wait guys, shush."
I look around to spot a young girl curled up a meter or so away from the large double doors. I would've completely walked past her due to the dim lighting. Cautiously, I crouch down beside her as the other two watch me from the doorway.
"Hi there," I greet in the softest voice I can muster, analysing the small blonde.
What in the bloody hell am I doing? New years resolution new years resolution.
Her head snaps up, just realising that somebody's caught sight of her. Her blue eyes go wide as she presses herself further into the wall.
"Oh no I didn't mean to scare you." I look back towards the boys but they obviously know even less than I do about comforting people and give me a clueless expression. "My name's Asteria." I hold out my hand to the blonde girl. "But you can call me Aster. What's your name?"
