<thankyou for 1.5k reads i an overwhelmed>
"rumor has it that somewhere in this house, there was a secret room built by the first owner and they stored their prized possessions. sadly, the people that now own the place havent found the room and have asked my people to help find it and they havent." i explain to my two friends sam and colby.
for a little backstory, we got invited to this mans house asking for help for the investigation of the hidden room. he told me that there were clues all over the house which led you to the room but he and others havent been able to do it. this is because the people that have tried to help him find the hidden treasure were old and he didnt know any people that were young. i am guessing it was a fresh mind thing ya know? get some new eyes on the case and figure out where it is. i gladly accepted the offer and hoped to put an end to the case once and for all. now, back to the investigation.
"simon would you be able to explain to sam an colby what we are going to be doing tonight? i only did a little to keep them guessing" simon was the owner of the house. he was a very kind elderly man. we had met up a couple hours ago and it felt like i had known him for longer than that.
"of course sweetie. so tonight us four are going to be looking for a hidden room in this building and it has some treasure that has been untouched for a couple hundred years. this place originally housed some of mu ancestors and was passed down by generation and now i own it. me and my friends have tried to find this treasure but have failed. i reached out to your good friend y/n and she gladly accepted to help me find the treasure and asked to bring some friends along, which are you two boys, and i couldnt say no. so, shall we get on with the investigation?" simon says speaking to sam and colby whilst occasionally glancing back at me.
"yes please" sam and colby said in unison. i have known these boys for about a year and i swear you not that at times they are the same person and you would think that they are dating (solby).
couple hours later
we had been looking all over the house for a while now and luckily, we have made a crack in the investigation. i had been researching what types of hidden rooms were used in the olden days and what i found was that they would be behind bookshelves and under staircases (a/n idk if this is true but pretend it is).
"do you think think that if we remove the back board of this bookshelf we will find the room?" colby says kneeling down to the bottom shelf.
"possibly but we would have to ask simon first before we start tearing this place up and finding nothing" i said going down to his level and inspecting the bottom shelf.
COLBYS POV
i watch as she runs her hand along the backboard to see if there was anything out of place. like there was a tiny hatch that would allow her to lift something and go into the possible room on the other side of the door. she had been doing it for a while and when i looked at her face, i could see something click in her head and her eyes lit up.
"colby stand up for a second" she said and i followed her actions and moved our of her way.
once i had moved out of the way, she went into my previous spot and continues to run her hand on the wall. i wasnt going to question what she was doing so i wouldnt ruin her train of thought. there was some books on the shelves and looked as if they hadnt been touched in years, more like centuries. i turned my attention back to y/n and saw her picking up and moving the books onto the little stool that was next to the self. what in the world is she doing.
"what are you doing" i say coming back down to her level.
"ok hear me out, back in those days, they would have hidden places under the stairs and behind bookshelves right? when we looked at the stairs there werent any discolouration between the wood and if there was it would have indicated that there was a gap and there wasnt. here it feels different. when i ran my finger over the gap it felt like there was a cold breeze so i figured if i moved the books out the way, i would be able to find something and i think i have" wow. she was one smart girl and i an lucky to call her my best friend. i had never thought of that.
"wow, what do you think you have found?" she has really got me intrigued now and i want to find out more.
"you know secret doors right? well what if this is a secret door and they tried to cover up what was on the other side of this wall. like they didnt want anyone to find it and have it hidden forever" she is so right. if you want to hide something you would do absolutely anything to keep it hidden for as long as you can. not from y/n though. she cracked this case in a couple hours. "what i want you to do is run your finger along the top the same way i did at the bottom and tell me what you feel"
i did what she said and ran my finger along the top. im guessing she told me to do that as she was too short to reach the top shelf and i was. when i ran my finger along the backboard, i felt something. it felt as though there was a cold breeze coming from the other side and someone tried to seal it but failed. it must have eroded over the years. i looked down to y/n and she was looking back up at me already watching my actions. she had a smug smile on her face and continued to do her investigating.
she started to take books off the shelves an place them on any other surface she could get to. i didnt want to interfere and i let her d what she was doing. "take pictures of those books for me" she said whilst handing me her phone. "why?" i said taking the phone out of her hand. "there is something about them and i want to know more" she said and went back to getting more books. y/n did have a point though, they were interesting and i also wanted to know more about them.
by the time that i was finished capturing the books in their new location, y/n was finished taking the books off the shelf and was staring at the shelf with concentration. i wonder what she was thinking. i moved to stand next to her so we could look at the shelf together.
after a couple minutes of doing this, she moved from beside me and stood on her tippy toes and reached up to the fifth shelf. once she had done that, i could see she was fiddling with something and i heard something click. like she had unlocked something. after that i saw her pull and the shelf began to move like an open door.
"no fucking way" i said.
she looked at me and went back to pulling the shelf. i came up behind her and pulled with her so it would be easier and she wouldnt have to hurt herself. by the time we got it open, we could see another room and it was filled with dust. you could faintly see the shine of diamonds and jewels.
we looked at one another at the same time with the same expression on our faces. "did we just solve a 200 year old mystery in one night?" she asked me. "no, you did" i said. i just helped her pull it. she did all the thinking and figuring out. i could see in her eyes that they were starting to glisten as she got emotional. i pulled her into a hug and she hugged back. this is a moment i am going to cherish for the rest of my life.
