Just as the Stone Giant which held the rest of Thorin’s Company fell, the knee of the Giant crashed against the rocks of an open cave. All of the men were safe except Bilbo who was hanging off the edge of the mountain side. Thorin handed the nearest dwarf his axe and hopped down to save Bilbo. Thorin lifted him up onto the rock above them.
Just as Thorin was climbing up the cliff he slipped and was hanging by one hand but his fellow dwarves came to his aid and helped him up. Bofur then spoke in relief about the half-ling, “I thought we had lost our burglar.”
Thorin turned to Bilbo and said with a little irritation, “He’s been lost ever since he left home. He should never have come. He has no place amongst us.”
Thorin walked toward the opening of the cave and called Dwalin to come within the cave with him. Eminork followed them in and set down her things. She stretched her back and sat down on a rock.
Kili and Fili sat down next to her and asked her a few questions, “Eminork why the long the face?” Kili said in suspense.
She looked at Kili and spoke with a tear in her eye, “Knowing that Thorin does not appreciate the company of my uncle and thus not mine either. I do not appreciate that and thus it makes me sad.”
Fili hugged her and said wiping away her tears, “It will be alright. Thorin is just angry of the rest stop in Rivendell. He will be over it. I can a sure you of that.”
Eminork smiled and thanked Fili and Kili. Bofur was told to keep watch by Thorin to make sure nothing came into the cave. Azog and his Orc riders were in the fields closer to the mountains then you might think. Azog’s Warg sniffed the ground then growled.
Azog spoke in the Dark Speech, “The dwarf- scum has retreated toward the mountains. Find them.” All the dwarves settled in and fell asleep on the cavern floor. What they didn’t know was that below them held a city of unspeakable creatures. A Goblin city was below them and the Goblin’s were watching them. Later in the night Bilbo awoke from his deep sleep and grabbed his sack. He carefully and quietly made his way to the entrance where Bofur was still on watch duty.
Bofur let out smoke from his pipe and said in a curious voice toward Bilbo, “And where do you think you’re going”? Bilbo replied to Bofur with a serious face, “Back to Rivendell.”
Bofur quickly stands up and says to Bilbo, “You can’t go. Your part of the Company. Your one of us. Are you just going to leave your niece here without knowing where her uncle has gone?”
Bilbo looked at Bofur’s eyes and said in a sad voice, “I’m not though am I? Thorin said I never should have come and he was right. I am a Baggins not a Took I don’t know what I was thinking…….”
Just as Bilbo said these words Thorin woke up from his sleep and had a face of regret. Bilbo continued his sentence, “I never should have ran out my door.”
Bofur sighed and said back to Bilbo’s statement, “You’re homesick. I understand.”
Bilbo began to raise his voice but quieted down again remembering there are people asleep, “No you don’t. You don’t understand. Your dwarves. You’re used to this life. Living off the road sticking to one place not belonging anywhere.”
Bofur’s eyes grew faint and his face was sad. Bilbo looked into his eyes and began to speak again, “I’m sorry.”
Bofur sighed and turned around to look at his fellow dwarves. He spoke again, “No you’re right. We don’t belong anywhere.” Thorin was still awake looked down in regret to what he had said to Bilbo. Bofur sighed again and spoke once more, “I wish you the best of luck in the world.”
Bilbo looked up in surprise. Bofur smiled and continued his sentence as he laid his hands on Bilbo’s shoulder, “I really do.” Bilbo smiled and turned to walk out of the cave when Bilbo’s sword began to glow blue which meant that Goblins or Orcs were near but in this case it was Goblins.
Bilbo lifted the sword from the sheath the blue was even brighter then before. Thorin looked up at the glowing sword and had a look of worry suspense. Just then the floor below them began to open. They were laying on a trap door! Thorin sat up and began to yell at his sleeping men and Eminork, “Wake up!” The Company awoke from their slumber but just as they woke up the floor beneath them opened up and they fell through it. After a few minutes they landed in the Goblin City.
