Chapter 1 Everything has changed

It's been already 3 months since everything has changed for the worst on earth. First we heard reports on the news that the planet will encounter an ice age way quicker than the scientists originally thought.

And since then, everything went downhill, in the span of weeks the temperature decreased dramatically on earth, even in Africa. People started to panic all around the world and for a reason, food was starting to lack because nothing was growing anymore, which means animal could not be fed and therefore there were not meat anymore. Riots started in every town, violence, and even the Army could not contain the anger of the citizens. Everybody knew it was the end of an era.

My name is Dana I'm a 24 years old girl and I originally lived in SAGUENAY in Canada, when everything started to collapse I fled from my apartment, took as many things as I could including food, medicine, bandages, tools and warm clothes and I went to my wooden cabin located 80 miles north of the city in the middle of nowhere and I feel pretty safe in there and I hope it stays that way.

" Damn, I only got one rabbit this time" I say as I look into my backpack " I'm sorry little buddy but it was you or me" I hope I'll have more luck on my next hunt even though wild animals are getting rare because of this damn weather, we're in September and when I went out this morning the thermometer indicated 7 degrees Fahrenheit. This ice age is clearly no joke.

I built a bow to hunt and I've got to admit it works well much better than expected, the only downside is that I have to often build more arrows because when I shoot them and miss my target I struggle to find them in this thick snow and I don't want to get cold by searching them in the snow. I can already barely feel my fingers with my gloves and we're still in summer, I can't even imagine what will happen in the winter.

After 30 minutes of walking I finally reach home if we can call it like that. My instinct makes me look after other footprints as I approach the cabin just in case someone is bold enough to try to rob me or worse. I even barricaded the windows of the ground floor to preserve the heat but also it makes it like the cabin is abandoned since years. I unlock it and finally get inside, the cabin is not very big, there's a bedroom a small kitchen, a living room with a fireplace and a small storage. It's freezing in here but at least there's no wind and I'm protected from blizzards.

I take my rabbit in the storage and think with disgust that I will have to skin it tomorrow, it's the worse part honestly but I don't have any choice If I want to survive. Thankfully because of this cold my house is like a big fridge and food is being preserved well in it. I also realise that I must gather more woods tomorrow because I'll be left with nothing rapidly If I keep going like this.

I sigh "No fire tonight I guess" I lock the door and as the sun sets and I get under the covers of my bed with most of my clothes to keep me warm and quickly because of tired I fall in a deep slumber.
