Destiny grinned up at Katy as her mother signed the papers, finally gaining full custody of her daughter. Katy grinned right back at her.
"You're all mine now, honey!" She squealed, hugging her daughter tightly.
"Yeah, who'd have thought it, huh?" Destiny chuckled, putting her head on Katy's shoulder.
"Are you sure you're okay with all of this though, baby? It's a lot of changes all at once," Katy checked protectively.
"Katy," Destiny laughed in exasperation. "Of course I'm okay with it. I'm blunt enough to tell you if I wasn't."
"I know, I know. I just worry about you, that's all. Moving countries, families, leaving all your friends and not to mention your siblings can't be easy..." Katy sighed, wanting to make sure - for the thousandth time - that Destiny was happy.
"You're my mum, you're allowed to worry." Destiny pointed out. "It's just part of the job description."
Katy laughed and stood up, dragging Destiny up with her. They thanked the police and social workers, who had been sorting out Katy gaining full custody of Destiny again, and walked out to Katy's shiny black hire car.
"Anyway, I need a fresh start and that's not going to happen here." Destiny's continued their previous conversation.
"Since when did you get so wise?" Katy teased, ruffling her hair.
"It's probably the meds," Destiny teased lightly. Katy flinched beside her.
Destiny was now on various medication to keep her mentally stable. It had been Demi's idea for her to start using them, instead of going into rehab or see a counsellor. Although she did still Skype Demi at least once a week for a chat about those things too.
"Katy, you okay?" Destiny asked, noticing her mum's change in mood.
"Of course," Katy replied quickly. She forced herself to smile at Destiny as they entered the car. "Why wouldn't I be?"
"Liar," Destiny shot back. "You always do that when the meds are mentioned, I don't know why it bothers you so much."
Katy signed, locking her eyes with Destiny's. She felt her eyes swell up at she took in the gitls features. Her sticking out bones, her scares, her eyes that hid away so much pain.
"Because if I'd have been there-" Katy began, but was promptly cut off by Destiny.
"Katy, don't even go there!" She cried in exasperation. "If you'd have been there nothing would change. I'd still have the disorders, except maybe the eating disorder. It's not your fault, pinkie promise."
A smile slipped onto Katy's lips as the use of 'their phrase'. She started the car, casting a sideways look at Destiny.
"Maybe pinkie promise can be our always," she said in a mock-romantic voice and fluttered her eyelashes.
"You sap," Destiny teased and gave her a playful nudge. "That's the kind of thing you should be saying to your boyfriend, not your daughter!"
"Do you see any men anywhere? No. So you're up, honey!" Katy shot back with a playful smirk.
"Well go find Mr Right before you get so desperate you propose to me!" Destiny giggled, earning a look from Katy.
"Creep," Katy joked in a singing voice. They continued the convention of playful insults before Destiny's face suddenly because serious again.
"But seriously, don't you want someone? Although I guess I never even asked if you have a boyfriend, did I?" She said, guilt crossing her features.
"You were a little pre-occupied," Katy pointed out. "When I first found you again I had a boyfriend, but right now I'm single. In other words, all yours!"
"Why did you break up?" Destiny pushed curiously.
Katy felt a knot of anxiety appear in the pit of her stomach. She never talked about why her and John broke up, she especially couldn't tell Destiny.
"Change of subject please," she said simply. Destiny frowned, but let it go.
"Okay... What about your longest relationship? Or most serious relationship?" Destiny asked instead, clearly interested.
"Probably my marriage, for both questions." Katy said, forcing herself to ignore the pain thinking about her failed marriage brought.
"You were married? When? To who?" Destiny ask, firing more questions at Katy.
"Wow, what's with all the relationship questions?" Katy cried in exasperation.
"I'm just curious," Destiny mumbled back. "It's a bit weird that your my mum and I know barely anything about you..."
"I know, I know. You're right," Katy sighed. "But we have our whole lives for that stuff, our whole lives together. There's time."
Destiny nodded, accepting this answer. She still fidgeted, one last question playing on her lips.
"What's up with you, bouncy?" Katy laughed, glancing sideways at Destiny. "Ants in your panse?"
"I just have on last question, please?" Destiny begging, pouting at Katy.
"Go on then," Katy said and pretended like she was giving in.
"Who's my d-dad?" Destiny asked, looking worried up at Katy.
Katy herself froze.
