Nestor had left Isabella's house around midnight. If Miguel hadn't have called he would have been tempted to stay the night. Unfortunately, he was needed to plan against the rebels so he had to leave her captivating presence. After years of merciless killings whenever his boss demanded, he had been feeling the weight of those deaths more than ever. Tonight, he finally felt like a small weight of that was lifted and it was all thanks to Isabella.
Walking into Miguel's office he found the advisor Devante and Marcus seated already. Nestor took his place standing behind Miguel. Marcus was updating Miguel on the situation with the Mayans. Angel, Coco, Gilly and EZ were the only ones who had gone behind Bishops back and been planning with the rebels. Those four had their patches removed but they went underground before they could be put down. They assumed they jumped the border and had met with the rebels in a new camp. The rebels took a huge hit with the rescue attack Isabella had launched. They figured it would probably take a while to regroup so focus would be on increasing H trade.
After the meeting Marcus pulled Nestor to the side. "How is she?" Nestor wasn't sure how much to say or if she would rather tell him. "Aside from nearly dying this morning? She seems fine. Is she always so open one moment and macabre the next?" Marcus shrugged his shoulders. "She's been like that since I met her. Don't know what she was like before her hermano was killed. Maybe it's the fact she should have been dead a long time ago but vengeance keeps her alive." Nestor went to ask what Marcus meant since it was the second time he alluded to a premature death for Isabella. Before he could Marcus' phone rang so he excused himself from the room.
"Miguel, do you know what Isabella's condition is?" He shook his head in response. "I thought it was like diabetes, like insulin injections but now..." Nestor dropped his head in defeat then left to go to bed.
Just after sunrise Nestor was having his first coffee of the day and indulging in a rare smoke. He hadn't slept much, Isabella consumed his thoughts, mostly he was thinking about what could be wrong with her. The worst case he could think of was cancer but surely there were ways to treat it. If it was an issue with money he was sure he could get Miguel to contact a doctor for her. Although he had just met her, he hated the thought of her dying.
He was pulled from his thoughts as a delivery van rang the buzzer asking for Nestor. That was strange, he never received mail or packages at this address. He had an apartment in town but he barely slept there anymore. Signing the package he felt it in case it was a trick but it was soft like material.
He opened the package and found a dress shirt and pants almost identical to what he was wearing. A card slipped out so he picked it up. I'll breathe easier if you wear this around. - I. Nestor chuckled, they words reminiscent of what he had said to her. He went back to his room to change into the clothes. He didn't know exactly what they were but he knew she wouldn't do anything without reason.
Not long after returning downstairs, his phone rang. It was Marcus. Answering the call with a blunt "What?" Marcus cut to the chase. "Got word the boys are going after your girl in retaliation. Better get up there quick, they got a head start. Watch out for Coco he's a sniper." Nestor was already jogging to his Escalade not bothering to correct Marcus about the 'your girls comment. He pointed to Arturo as he ran past. "You're with Miguel today!" He received a nod as he was closing the truck door and putting it in gear.
He tried to ring Isabella but the phone went to voicemail he left a message warning her the rebel Mayans were on their way to attack. Hoping she would get his message he raced to her. As long as she was aware he had faith she would kill them but in a surprise attack he didn't know how she would do.
Isabella had been showering when her phone vibrated on her bed. She had spent longer than usual to make sure her legs, bikini and armpits were completely hairless. She knew she was only do this in the hopes of spending more time with Nestor and it made her feel sick. She had avoided forming any connections since she found out she was terminally ill. She didn't think it was fair to love someone and have them love you if you knew you are going to leave them. As much as she tried to fight it the growing fondness, her thoughts kept returning to the mercenary.
