The last month had been hard on the husband and wife. Isabella's dosage had gone up to the maximum of 4 mls and it was barely lasting 7 hours. She was exhausted all the time and her weight kept falling away. The couple had flown to Japan the day after the wedding and had travelled between the islands for two weeks. Nestor had loved every moment of it, he could see how happy being back there made her.
The league had welcomed her and Nestor into the temple and they bestowed a sacred wedding ceremony of their own upon the duo. Soon after their return, Isabella took a turn and was constantly sick. As supportive as ever, her husband would hold her hair back when she vomited and would hold cool clothes to her head when she was hot.
"It's time my love." They had discussed and argued about her final request but he couldn't bring himself to do it. He knew she was dying but he couldn't be the one to kill her. "Please Nessy, this isn't living. I'm wasting away in this bed and it's only going to get worse. It hurts so much."
He had to leave the room, he couldn't do it. He had killed hundreds of people mercilessly but this was one he could never do. He must have paced for hours before heading to Happy's room. The man hadn't left, and he kept to himself so they didn't ask him to leave. After hearing a reply at the knock on the door, Nestor went in. "She wants to die and wants me to be the one to kill her." No greeting or anything. Happy put the book he was reading down. "If you were in her position and bed ridden wouldn't you rather die? She loves you and wants you to save her from that shitty fate." Sighing in defeat he went back to their room. "I love you Izzy, just give me one more night, I promise you tomorrow." She nodded to him and smiled weakly. "Thank you."
That evening Happy sat on the edge of the bed beside his Bella. He held her hand and saw the bones jutting out, proof of her wasting away. "You did good lil B. I'm proud of you and I know my son would be too. Tell him I said hi when you see him, okay? Don't worry about your husband, I'll watch out for him while you're gone. Love you kid." He kissed her head before walking to the door. "Love you too, dad. Don't forget the envelope." He nodded and left before she saw him cry.
Opening his beside drawer he saw the sealed envelope. Ripping it open he opened the card and a key fell out.
Hey Baldy,
Stay here as long as you need, Ness is going to need a friend in the coming days or he will go back to what he knows but a senseless killer is not who he truly is.
If you need a M.C. family to feel complete, call Bishop Losa, he owes me four favours and is short on four members. For the man who inspired me to ride, it seems fitting that you should have the bike. Hopefully, it makes you feel closer to your son and I. Thank you for being a good father to me. You may have felt like a failure for leaving but the valuable lessons you taught me made me who I am. I know now how hard it is to leave and it shows me how strong you were.
Love always,
Lil BHe let the card fall to his lap and saw the paper registration for Juan's Harley fall out. It had been changed to Happy's name the night Tig had died. She was so thoughtful and intelligent, he couldn't have been prouder of her. He folded the letter and put it in his kutte so it would always be close. He looked at the empty spaces his patches once were. Like his son, he didn't do well being alone. He knew it wouldn't be long before he visited the Santo Padre clubhouse in search of Bishop Losa. Wanting to clear his head he picked up the key and headed to garage.
Isabella heard Juan's bike start and smiled peacefully. She was nearly free of the weight of burden this life had put on her. Tomorrow, she would finally sleep forever, awaiting her sweet Nestor in the next life. Taking another dose, just 4 hours since the last one, she made use of the short burst of energy. Leaving the bed, she carried herself along the hall and out to the lounge, eventually finding Nestor at her piano.
He could hear her coming up behind him and it made him even sadder. She used to be a silent ninja, who loved to make him jump when she popped up behind him. It was another sad reminder of what he was losing. She sat beside him on the padded bench and tapped at a few keys. He didn't know why he sat there, it wasn't like he could play and she hadn't played it in the three months he had lived with her. He thought it was just for show but seeing her skinny fingers dance over the keys, he could see she knew what she was doing.
He slid further along the bench so she could sit more comfortably. She began to play a slow sad melody of a song he hadn't heard before. She started to sing along and he cried silently again. So many thing he still didn't know about her and he wouldn't have the time to learn.
"Make your pain my own
And if you need me all night or until I grow old
No you don't have to ask me to
I'm gonna take good care of you
Yes I'm gonna stay with you
I'll be right at your fingertips
Hold on tight and we'll get through this
Angels are calling from all around
Lifting what's broken comforting what is bound
Now you can rest in your time of need
I am here when it's hard to breathe
If you can't remember what is good anymore
I will surrender and kick down heaven's door"She closed the lid of the piano and turned the lock. In the silence, the finality of the moment echo around. With her hand in his she led him back to their room. The moon had broken the clouds and illuminated their bed. She sat her husband on the bed and climbed on his lap. Holding his face in her hands she kissed him softly and whispered to him. "Love me, one last time."
Nestor woke as sunlight pierced the room, he felt at peace for the first time since they returned from their honeymoon early. They had spent the night passionately showing each other how much they loved the other. It was their way of expressing their feelings and their goodbye. He knew what he had to do, he loved this woman so much he would cut his own heart out to take her pain away. Running his hand over his face he wiped the sleep from his eyes.
As he fully came awake he saw a peaceful look on his wife's face. He went to place a gentle kiss on her lips, her favourite way to wake up, but when their lips touched he froze. They were cold. He looked closer at her face and saw the blueish hue to her skin. Pressing his finger to her neck he felt for a pulse finding none. Pulling her cold body into his arms, he cried. He cried until he had no tears left but still he held her, she was his anchor and now she was gone. When he finally found his voice it was broken and gravelly. "Thank you, Izzy. Thank you for giving me a life worth living and giving me your precious time."
He finally laid her to rest three days later. He chose her final resting place under the lone tree. In the place where he stood the day they met, beneath the shuriken scar in the trunk. A permanent reminder of them both. Marcus, Diana, Happy, Miguel and Emily headed inside after her casket was lowered to the ground but Nestor stayed. He couldn't leave yet, not after the news he had been given. His heart was breaking all over again.
He held the papers in his hand, crinkling under the pressure but unable to ease his grip on them. Crushed, he fell to his knees in the dirt. Miguel had come back to check on his friend after he saw he had not followed them inside. Placing his hands on his best friends shoulder he saw the papers in Nestors hands. Autopsy Report. He couldn't see the details from his position.
"Come, mi amigo. Let's go inside and have a drink." Nestor followed Miguel numbly, entering the home that felt cold without Isabella. "Can I ask why an autopsy was done? I thought her illness was known." Miguel asked his friend. Nestor placed the papers on the table they were seated at. Miguel read over the report quickly before pulling his friend in for man hug. "I'm sorry, my friend." The others watching the exchange were confused but left the grieving man to the comfort of his friend.
When Miguel went out to the others on the patio, Nestor went to their bedroom and sat on his side of the bed. He grabbed her pillow and buried his face in it, memorising her scent before it faded away. Marcus finally asked Miguel what the papers had said. "There was an autopsy done because she went downhill so fast. They found out why her body couldn't cope anymore. She was just over two months pregnant."
No one could talk, there weren't any words that could possible describe how everyone felt. They had seen the couple with Cristobal, she would have been an amazing mother. They hadn't just been burying their friend out there but a child as well. Emily went to Nestor's room and found him, a broken man who had lost everything. She grabbed a suitcase from the closet and started packing it with his clothes. "Come stay with us for a while okay. You still have family with us. Miguel, Cristobal and I will always be your family too."
