Sepsis

When I woke up, I was in a hospital bed, with a tube going into my arm. I wanted to scratch it, but I knew it might damage it. Plus I do feel better than before with whatever's being put into me. It looks like a clear fluid. I groaned, and shuffled, making a few people around me turn. I realise that it's my friends, plus Butters and My mom carrying Esther. 

"You okay now Cartman?" Kyle asked. I couldn't tell where his voice was coming from, so I just placed a hand to my face and nodded.

"I'm kind of hungry." I said, and luckily Butters wasn't completely useless and brought some KFC chicken. He handed me the bucket, and I picked the first one I saw, taking a bite. The doctor walked in, and sat down in front of my bed with some sort of spinny chair.

"Hello Eric. How are you feeling?" He asked. He had some sort of UK accent.

"Um, I feel kind of achy and tired, but otherwise alright."

"You're a very lucky boy. If you're friends didn't get you here when they did, the sepsis in your body from your infection could've spread to your vitals and we would've had to send you to the Intensive care unit. You've been diagnosed with severe sepsis, so you'll have to stay here for awhile. We are going to prescribe you antibiotics to go along with the Intravenous fluids we're going to inject into you through that tube. Since your blood pressure is pretty low, we're gonna give you some insulin every morning also hopefully making rid of the problem. If everything goes accordingly, you'll be better sometime in early February." He then turned and left. I sighed, and slumped into the bed, running my good hand into my hair. I'm so embarrassed letting the guys see me in such a state, that I put myself into. My mom moved next to my bed, and looked at me with glossy eyes.

"Eric hun, If you were having problems, then you should've came to me or your friends."

"I know mom. Believe me, I know."

She nodded, kissed me on the cheek and picked up Esther from her carrier, carrying her for me to see. Why'd she have to do that. I already feel bad as is, sitting here in the hospital in front of all my friends, now she has to let the kid see me. I swear the kid looks sad for me. As if she understands the situation. That's pretty freaky, so I return to my chicken. My mom senses my cue, and leaves with the kid, with me and my friends left to talk in private. We sit in silence for a while, until Stan speaks up,

"She's right ya know. You could've came to one of us."

I don't answer. What am I supposed to say? I don't trust you guys?! I was sad?! I was trying to distract myself from my hard on for the local Jew with pain?!

Kyle tenderly touches my arm, traces the marks with his fingers.

"I'm sorry Cartman."

"Why? You're not the one who did this Kahl."

"I know, but I was the only one who knew about it. I didn't tell anyone when I should've. I knew I should've, but I didn't want to upset you. If I'd just told someone, this would've never happened. It's all my fault."

There was once a time where I would've laughed at Kyle's moment of sorrow. Not now. I can't bear to see him so upset. Like a switch flipped in my head. It makes me just want to wipe his tears and hold him in my chest forever. I would love to do that, but the guys are here, and I'm not gonna embarrass myself by being all mushy for Kyle.

"Don't be an idiot Kahl."

He looked me in the eye, and I noticed the tears already forming in his eyes. I stumbled on my words a bit when I continued,

"You're giving yourself too much credit. It wasn't you who started slashing at your wrist was it? No Kahl, it was me. And for a dumb reason too. So, shut your crying ass up and try this on for size. I'm here. I'm not dead, and sure I'm sick, but I'll recover. Besides, if media's taught me anything, it's that this is character development at work."
