When my dad walked in, I swear my heart stopped. My mom might be upset with me and have a long 'I'm disappointed in you' speech, but my dad could melt paint with his glare. Which I was the focus of. Intensely. Oh boy am I in trouble.

"Young lady, do you have any idea how worried your mother has been? How she called me completely frantic because you ran away from her. So I had to leave my meeting to look for you for hours. I expected better than this. You disappoint me."

If the floor could open a hole and swallow me right now, that would be great. I was trying to decide how to defend myself when Jiros mom walked in from the back room.

"Why, hello Kevin. I see you found something you needed in my store."

My dad nodded and put his hand on my shoulder. " Yes. My daughter and I will be leaving now. Thank you for looking out for her." He turned me towards the door and we left.

As we started for the hotel, I waited for him to let me have it. My dad sighed and ran his hand through his hair. He looked at me and said, "I understand why you are upset."
Not what I was expecting, but okay.
"Your mother and I have made a lot of decisions in the last month without explaining why. But I want you to know that every one of them is for your benefit. You see, a big reason we decided to move here is so you can go to a special school for special kids."

I stopped dead still. Hold up. Special. "And why exactly do I need to go to a special school. Is it because I'm different or ..."

My dad held up his hands. "Now wait a minute. We may not have been the best parents, but I thought that we had definitely taught you that being different or special is never a bad thing. It's our differences that make us better."

I rolled my eyes. "I know Dad, I know. It just sounded like you see me like everyone else does, some kind of freak." I started walking again, at least this way he couldn't see me cry.

My dad walked slowly beside me and asked, "Who said that?"
Sigh. "Dad, I am the most accident prone person I know. I can't use a water fountain without it going beserk. I knock things over all the time, and sometimes without even touching it. And don't forget, I inherited Mom's hair. I mean, I've heard of red hair but it's so light it's pink. Pink, Dad."

Dad started telling me stories about when he was a kid, how he would get picked on and how he would get revenge. I didn't realize he was such a prankster. I'm going to have to remember this stuff, could be useful some day.

By now we were back at our hotel room. Mom kissed and hugged me and gave me her speech. We ate takeout and watched a funny movie. After I went to bed I started to replay the day. And that's when it hit me. Wait! How did Jiros Mom know my dad's name?!
