A/N: Hey guys, sorry this took me SO long to wrap up! Unfortunately, I ended up getting pretty sick right as I finally got to work on this last chapter and my brain has been a bit fuzzy so this isn't quite the ending I had planned :( I'm definitely hoping to come back to this later (when I can think straight again) and make this 10x better but alas... I don't want to keep you waiting any longer so for now I hope this ties things up well enough for you all. Thank you so much for reading my story I hope you enjoyed! :)
A FEW WEEKS LATER
(Reader POV)
The familiar smell of curry drifted out of the shiny black pot I was stirring once again. Clouds of the savory scent swirled about the room and filled my lungs with each inhale. But instead of my mouth watering like usual, I felt my stomach begin to churn. With a sigh, I stepped away from the stove and went outside to get some fresh air. My body was enveloped by a refreshing breeze as I slid open the door and sat down on the front stoop. I gulped in the crisp air. This seemed to be the only thing to help me feel any better the last few days. I must have picked up a bug when I was volunteering at the academy last week, I thought to myself shaking my head, although that wouldn't explain what happened the day after Neji left for his mission. I pondered the events of the last few weeks while my legs swung mindlessly over the side of the porch.
*TWO WEEKS EARLIER*
The morning sun crept through a crack in the bedroom curtains and illuminated my face, causing me to stir in bed. I mindlessly felt around the silky sheets next to me only to remember that I had kissed my husband goodbye just 24 hours ago as he left for another long and perilous mission. With a groan, I quickly sat up to begin my day. Bad choice. My stomach suddenly felt like it was doing gymnastics and I barely made it to the bathroom in time before completely emptying its contents into the toilet. Did I eat something bad last night? No...I must just be anxious about Neji putting himself in danger again, I concluded as my body began to quiver slightly with fatigue. I managed to sip a tall glass of water as I curled up in my sheets once again and stayed there for the remainder of the day.
*PRESENT TIMELINE*
While I had been mostly fine during the days following Neji's departure, my stomach had become sensitive again lately. Even the smell of my usual 'welcome home' curry was putting me off. Maybe it's just time for me to change up my usual recipe...
As I sat there pondering the source of my illness I heard the familiar sound of my husband's smooth voice call out to me, "Darling I'm home."
I whipped my head up to see Neji gliding down the path towards me. Not a hair on his head was out of place as a small smile played on his lips. Typical, I thought with a chuckle.
Suddenly the smile was wiped from my face. I felt a lump rise in my throat as I blinked back tears. The pain of missing him suddenly came boiling up inside of me all at once until I began to feel nauseous. God how i'd missed him. I couldn't stand to be apart from him for a moment longer.
"N-nejiii" I sobbed and scrambled to my feet a bit too quickly. Within seconds my vision began to blur and the world around me started to spin as I took my first steps towards him. My quivering knees buckled and I felt my husband's strong arms wrap around me before the world went black...
...
Beep. Beep. Beep.
An irritating drone of noises began to become crisper in my ears as I groggily came to. "What the hell is that sound," I muttered as my eyes slowly blinked opened. There was something off about my surroundings. The wallpaper of the room was unfamiliar, it wreaked disinfectant, and I was surrounded by strange screens flashing numbers and symbols I couldn't understand. As I moved to rub the sleep out of my eyes, I felt a resistance around my arms. Looking down I could see that I was covered in tubes and wires that seemed to be attaching me to the curious monitors. "Where the hell am I?" I demanded as I began to sit up.
"Whoa whoa take it easy there," chirped a woman's voice from the corner of the room. I turned my head towards the voice only to see Neji standing next to a woman who I didn't recognize. "You're in the hospital honey. Your husband here brought you in after you passed out earlier," the woman continued with a cheeky smile. I glanced over at Neji to see an unreadable expression shadow his face.
"Am I okay?" I asked hesitantly.
"Oh honey, you're more than okay. The nausea, the blacking out, the sudden bursts of emotion; they're all just temporary symptoms. Nothing to worry about at this point," she explained as if I knew what she was referring to.
"Symptoms of what?" I demanded starting to get irritated with the suspense and confusion.
Congratulations!" The nurse chimed glancing at her clipboard. "You're pregnant. Looks to be just a few weeks along now."
I felt a shiver run up my spine as my jaw nearly hit the floor. I couldn't speak. I couldn't move. All I could do was stare into my husband's eyes as he stared back into mine. Soon a small grin spread across his face as he finally moved to stand by my bedside. While he appeared relatively unphased on the outside, his eyes shone brighter than ever alluding to his pure joy at the news. Silently, the nurse stepped out of the room and slid the door shut behind her offering us some privacy. Without breaking eye contact, Neji's warm slender fingers intertwined with mine, giving them a gentle squeeze. We just sat there for a moment. Silent. Never letting go of one another until even our breathing began to synchronize.
I felt as though I was dreaming. Slowly, I reached up to cup my husband's handsome face in my hand. He gently placed a kiss in my palm and its warmth reassured me that this was all really happening.
Taking my hand in his, he brought it away from his face and rested it upon my pregnant belly. "Darling, we did it," he whispered in his honey smooth voice. I couldn't help but notice his eyes begin to gloss over.
"We did it," was all I managed to say back as my lips cracked a smile from ear to ear.
Finally, our dreams are coming true.
