Dear Father,

Hello, Father. How are you doing? Is your health alright? How are Mother and my younger siblings?

I'm writing to you because I miss all of you so much. I'm really sorry I haven't sent letters until now—training has kept me extremely busy.

Master Urokodaki's training is very intense. Every day, he sends me up Mt. Sagiri, and I have to descend while dodging dozens of traps. It sharpens my reflexes, but it's exhausting.

When I reach the bottom, he hands me a wooden sword and tells me to swing it 1,000 times. When I finish, he adds 500 more. Afterward, my arms go completely numb.

Yesterday, we had what he called the "Throwdown Ceremony." Master would repeatedly throw me to the ground and said, "If you fall, you must learn to fall properly and stand back up faster."

Recently, he's been teaching me about different Breathing Styles and Total Concentration Breathing. He offered to pass down the ten forms of Water Breathing to me... but I politely declined.

I want to create my own Breathing Style. It was tough, and I failed so many times, but I finally succeeded.

Master also brought me to a waterfall and told me to become one with the water. The pressure was unbearable, but I endured it.

My daily routine now is hiking the mountain, avoiding traps, training with a real blade, and learning how to cut through moving obstacles.

I'll stop here for now. I promise I'll visit home after another year of training. Please tell Mother and my siblings that I love them.

With love,
(Y/N)

After finishing the letter, a Kasugai crow flew to her. She handed it the letter and instructed it to deliver it to her father. The bird cawed once and soared off into the sky.

With her blade in hand, (Y/N) returned to the mountain for training.

She soon found Urokodaki waiting for her.

"Master, what will I be doing today?"

Urokodaki turned. "I have nothing more to teach you. Follow me."

(Y/N) blinked in surprise but followed quietly.

They stopped at another mountain. In front of them stood a massive boulder, taller than (Y/N) and twice as wide.

"Cut this boulder in half," Urokodaki said. "Do that, and I will allow you to enter the Final Selection."

"W-Wait! How am I supposed to—!?" But he was already walking away, disappearing into the mist.

(Y/N) turned toward the boulder and unsheathed her sword. She took her stance and swung—CLANG!

The sword bounced off.

She tried again, and again... and again. No progress.

"How am I supposed to cut this thing? It's like cutting a mountain."

(Y/N) dropped to her knees, both hands bloodied and bruised from holding the sword for so long.

"Eight months... and still nothing."

In frustration, she punched the boulder over and over until her knuckles bled.
