"What are you doing here?" Rachel questioned as she led the New Directions into the auditorium only to see the Troubletones doing the same.
With West Side Story out of the way (and a raging success), all eyes were now set on Sectionals, meaning the rivalry between the two Glee Clubs was more fierce than ever before.
Crossing her arms defiantly, Mercedes spoke. "Shelby told us she had something to show us. What are you doing here?"
"Mr Schue said the same thing." Finn explained, his eyes shifting around the room suspiciously.
"Let me guess, he wants to combine choirs for Sectionals." Santana rolled her eyes, all too familiar with Mr Schue's overly optimistic tendencies. "Well, it's not gonna happen. The Trouble Tones are here to stay. So why don't you shuffle your busted choir off our stage?"
"Look, you guys, we can compete without being enemies. All right? We don't have to get vicious." Finn attempted to reason, but judging by the look on Santana's face, she wasn't interested.
"Oh, I think we do, Soft Serve. See, the Troubletones are 3F: fierce, femme, phenomenal." She sassed, before turning back to the Troubletones in a fake panic. "Oh, and, guys, hurry up, go get some moist towels. We have to keep Finn wet before we can roll him back in the sea."
Deciding enough was enough, Rachel stepped forward in anger. "Okay, you know what, Santana, Finn is in great shape and your meanness only highlights your own personal insecurities."
"And, Rachel, your mustache is thicker than a Middle Eastern dictator's." Santana responded with her usual witty tone.
Before anyone could respond, the sound of a gentle guitar could be heard and before anyone knew it, Mr Schue and Miss Corcoran had burst out into a mash up.

"Mr Schue, Shelby, I think we can all admit that that was weirdly amazing. But what exactly was the point?" Rachel asked with a confused smile.
"That sometimes bringing together two conflicting things can create something totally unexpected."
Mercedes closed her eyes with a sigh. "We're not combining Glee Clubs, Mr. Schue."
"That's not what I'm talking about. Shelby and I agree that with Sectionals coming up for both of us, it's time we all got serious with some friendly competition."
"Each group's going to put together their own mash-up to perform head-to-head..."
"...for the first annual McKinley High Mash-Off." The two teachers announced proudly, causing a wave of excitement to rush through both Glee Clubs.
"Yeah, come on!"

"Okay, guys!" Mr Schue announced with a clap as he entered the Choir Room. "We have our work cut out for us this week with this mash-off. The Trouble Tones have a
lot of powerful voices, so song selection is key here. Any suggestions?""What about The Clash?" Artie suggested, while Blaine had other ideas. "Uh, The Police?"
"REM!" Mike said with enthusiasm.
"Spice Girls." Kurt offered.
"Jonas Brothers." Alicia added into the mix, inspired by her childhood crush on Joe Jonas. Quinn hummed in agreement and gave the Cheerio a high five, although she was personally more of a Nick Jonas kinda gal.
"Guys, no, no, we can't use any of those bands. The only thing they have in common is that they all broke up, and right now the New Directions need to feel united." Finn said, bringing a stop to everyone's ideas.
"I like what you're saying, Finn." Mr Schue smiled, pointing at the boy with a look of support. "It's not just about the music, but where it comes from."
"Who do you think we should use?"
"Well, how about this? People think Hall and Oates are famous for their cool, puffy hair and that dude's banging 'stache. But also they're awesome for staying together over the long haul." Finn spoke with a tone of optimism.
"Just like us, despite all their differences." Rachel smiled.
Continuing, Finn walked towards Rory who had recently joined the New Directions. "I think we should give the solo to the new guy. Get him prepared for what's in store when the stakes get high. Rory, I think you'll do a good job."
"Thanks, Finn, but I don't think I'm ready for that honour just yet." Rory shook his head sheepishly, conflicted between the honour of being chosen by Finn and his nerves to perform.
"Come on. You're totally ready, Rory." Blaine turned to him with an encouraging smile. "You'll kill it. We'll all help you. It's a great idea, Finn."
"Thanks." Finn gave Blaine an appreciative half-smile before continuing on with his vision. "Alicia and Quinn, I also think you guys should take solo parts as well. Santana and Mercedes were right, we need to highlight everyone's talent in this Glee Club and I think your voices would sound great with this song."
Squealing with excitement, Quinn pulled Alicia in for a hug while the Glee Club around them clapped supportively. Turning to the next order of business, Finn began discussing costume ideas and slowly but surely the mash-up began to take shape.

"Dodgeball?" Leo questioned with a scoff as Alicia and Quinn explained burning rivalry between the two Glee Clubs to him while eating lunch. "Why are they making you play dodgeball?"
"I have no idea, something to do with Finn and Santana's ongoing feud." She replied with a shrug, stealing a forkful of pasta from Quinn's plate. "Hey babe, aren't you great at dodgeball? You should join the New Directions for the day and help us out." She suggested, mostly as a joke but with a small glimmer of hope that he might actually say yes.
Letting out another scoff, Leo shook his head with force. "Never gonna happen."
"Why not?" Quinn asked, a challenging tone lacing her voice and her eyebrows raised at the boy.
"Because singing and dancing around in matching outfits is not my idea of fun. I've just about managed to get my dignity back after that lame musical." He tried to explain himself, but received only a cold glare from Quinn. "Whatever, I've got practice. Good luck with your dodgeball game or whatever."
He got up with a huff, placing a half hearted kiss on Alicia's cheek and shooting Quinn daggers as he went. The second that he was out of earshot, Quinn turned to her best friend with a disapproving look. "God, what do you see in him? He's a total jerk."
"He's not that bad, he can be nice." Alicia said in an unconvincing tone, before muttering under her breath. "Sometimes."
"I can't believe I leave you for like two weeks and when I come back you've forgotten all about Sam and moved on with some giant, ginger douchebag."
"I haven't forgotten about Sam." Alicia insisted, looking down guiltily. "I just thought maybe being with someone else would help me get over him."
"And has it?" Giving her a pointed look, Quinn already knew the answer.
"Yes...no...I don't know." Flustered, Alicia buried her face in her hands. "I guess I've kinda got no choice, have I? He's gone for good, and I'm with Leo now. That's just the way it is."
While Alicia turned her attention back to her food, a sad smile appeared on Quinn's face. All she wanted was for the girl to be happy, and Leo definitely wasn't helping with that no matter how much Alicia was fooling herself. Just as a crazy idea popped into her mind, Quinn was snapped out of her thoughts as Alicia grabbed her arm with a sense of urgency. "Crap! We've gotta go get ready for the dodgeball match!"
