Song of the Chapter : Power & Control by Marina and The Diamonds

Hero's POV

The four of us walk into the great hall together in a row. Looking up I see hundreds of candles floating on their own. Below them are four long tables, one for each of the houses. I take a seat with the others at the Gryffindor table and wait to find out what house I will belong to.

Dumbeldore goes over the rules for the new students. I really am the oldest of the bunch. I hope that they give me the opportunity to test into the correct year. Once I received my letter, I began studying some of the lessons in the books I purchased.

"When I call your name you will come forth and I shall place the Sorting Hat on your head, and you will be sorted into your houses."

Professor McGonagall begins calling names one at a time. The first child walks up slowly and sits down on the chair and everyone waits for the hat to speak. After a few seconds the shouts,

                                                   "RAVENCLAW!"

The Ravenclaw table cheers as the young boy runs over to the table and takes a seat.

"Are you nervous?" Ron asks me.

               I nod.

"Don't be, what you get doesn't really define you. Even if you get Slytherin..."

"What?" I interrupt him. "Even if I get Slytherin? What's wrong with Slytherin?"

Before he can reply I hear my name being called. Harry, Ron, and Hermione wish me luck as I stand up and walk towards the front. I can feel everyone's eyes on me. For a moment I forgot that I was older than the other students being sorted. A group of boys snicker as I walk past. I try my best to ignore them but it's easier said than done. I start walking faster until I make it to the chair.

"What is this? Do we have an oversized baby joining our school this year?" Someone from the Slytherin table shouts and everyone laughs.

Don't let them see that it bothers you, Hero.

I sit on the chair and McGonagall places the hat on my head. The room goes completely silent. I hear the Sorting Hat take a deep breath as he shouts,

                                                  "SLYTHERIN!"

I look over at Harry, his mouth is wide open in shock. Ron gives me a sympathetic look. My head spins in the direction of the green table and I see everyone shouting; everyone except for one. A boy with white-blonde hair and blue-grey eyes is looking me up and down, and not in a nice way.

"You've got to be fucking joking!" he says to the boy next to him.

I take a seat a few people down. He continues to stare at me almost like he's waiting for a reaction.

"I heard her parents are muggles." the girl on the other side of him whispers loud enough for everyone to hear.

That's what makes everyone stare at me. I look up and scan the people around me. Most of them seem to be putting on a scary face just for show.

The boy to my left elbows my arm. "Don't worry we aren't all that bad." he laughs. "I'm Blaise by the way."

This boy has beautiful skin. I swear there's not a single flaw on his face! I introduce myself and explain why I'm joining the school so late. I know I'm going to have to explain that a lot more.

"Zabini, don't tell me you're really talking to that filthy mudblood!"

It's the blonde boy again. By now I know his voice by heart. He's already shouted three insults at me in my little bit of time being here.

"I'm sorry, is there a problem?" I ask him.

This takes the boy by surprise. He's not used to people talking back. Everyone waits for him to reply but he seems to be lost in thought. I could turn around and continue my conversation with Blaise Zabini and act as nothing happened.

But where's the fun in that?

I push myself up off the bench and lean closer to the boy. I can smell the mint on his breath. He tries to think of an insult but before he can say anything I ask,

                                            "Cat got your tongue?"

The whole table looks at him and laughs. I can see his cheeks getting red. I'm not completely evil so I flash him a smirk before getting up and leaving the great hall.

~~

I share a room with two other Slytherin girls. Pansy Parkinson and Daphne Greengrass. They both seem alright, although Pansy tries way too hard to be mean. As I'm putting my clothes away Pansy walks in. I expect her to make some rude comments but she smiles at me.

"Can we just forget about the rude comment I made earlier? It was uncalled for." I shut the bottom drawer of my wardrobe and turn to face her.

"After seeing you stand up to Malfoy you have my respect."

             "Malfoy?" I ask.

"The blonde one." She replies. "His name is Draco Malfoy. His family is really big in the wizarding world."

She continues to explain his family history, how wealthy the Malfoy family is, and how popular he is at Hogwarts. It's a shame that he has to act this way. He really is charming. My first thought when seeing him was "wow" but that quickly changed when he decided to be a git.

"Do you think they'll let you test tomorrow?" Daphne asks. "You seem intelligent so you might be able to skip a few years."

"Yes. I spoke to Dumbledore before coming up here. He said I will be able to test before classes begin tomorrow morning."

"I'm off to bed," Pansy says while yawning. "Good luck tomorrow, Hero. I bet you'll do great."

She blows out the candle beside her bed and Daphne does the same. I pull the covers halfway down on my bed and snuggle up under the covers.

Let's hope Pansy and Daphne are right.
