Chapter Forty-Two,
Hostiles and Calamities

  

NEGAN WALKED Chloe out to the fence with his men behind them. She felt uncertainty clouding her mind regarding his belief in her innocence regarding Daryl and Sherry's escape. This uncertainty made her anxious, pondering what he might have planned.

"I did you and Rick a favour. I noticed your frustration with Spencer badmouthing your leader," he informed her. "And let me remind you, I've done this before."

"Do you recall Luke, the despicable one? I ended his life on your behalf. He deserved it. He's gone, and I handled it. I did it for you. Yet, I never received a thank you, but that's alright."

He still clung to the notion that a few good deeds made him the righteous one. He conveniently forgot Glenn, Abraham, and Alli, expecting her to forgive and forget as Dwight and Sherry did.

She wasn't certain about what these two had endured, but it likely paled in comparison to her own experiences. What they had all been through. Perhaps it was easier for them to just move past it and live with it.

"Sweetheart, you need to earn more favour to balance out the medical supplies you've been consuming."

"I took a bullet for you," Chloe declared.

"Oh, sweetheart, right after your suicidal friend tried to end me."

"You killed Spencer and Olivia!"

"Ho, ho! Don't tell me she cared for him. And most importantly, don't tell me Olivia was your friend; it didn't seem that way."

"They are my people!"

"We are your people!" he roared. "Let me remind you of the rules, sweetheart-"

"I know the rules!" Chloe yelled.

"It doesn't seem like you do, because that annoying attitude is back!"

There was a pause as she abandoned the argument, while he stared at her, waiting for her to continue.

When she didn't, he pressed on. "For the record, your fierce twin also tried to kill me before, and look what happened to her. They've all witnessed that, and yet they don't learn. Your people don't learn, Chloe."

How dare he mention her name?

"What happened to Eugene?" she asked.

"Ah, he's just fine," he said, leaning closer and whispering in her ear. "He'll be assisting us in many ways. It's a shame Daryl left you here, don't you think so?"
