We stepped out of the spire and walked through the garden because I wanted to check all the commotion that was taking place on the other side of the shrubbery. As we walked through the beautiful patch of grass the smell of lavender blooms got mixed with something far more devious, the smell of rotting flesh. The others didn't notice this change in smell but I did and picked up my pace to reach there.
"Dude, where's the fire?" Mary asked.
"I can smell something," I said.
"Me too," Paviraa said as she just noticed it and began running towards it.
We hopped over the low shrubs and through the vines scattered that bordered the garden with the area where all the commotion was to find a small crowd circled around something, chattering. I raced through the tombstones and pushed the people away to find another deadbody. This one's hands were angled to indicate 5am. The timeline I had worked out in my head was all wrong. This was the first body. We had lost five lives and another one will happen soon.
The body laid there covered in periwinkle flowers to hide the putrid odour. A small breeze had probably exposed the body. The flesh was partially decomposed, bluish-black and had attracted some maggots. Mary and Paviraa covered their noses as we stood there.
I addressed the crowd, "Anyone informed Lord Ishrafil?"
There was no answer from the crowd.
"Mary, you are connected to him. Inform him at the earliest," I said.
"She is doing it as we speak," Paviraa said.
"Yup, informed. They should be on their way. He asked you to take the lead at the crime scene and Paviraa and I will secure the perimeter," Mary spoke.
An Ethereal gate opened and six people walked through. They were wearing the same robes as the rest, except their arm band had a caduceus symbol embroidered on it in red. One of them had the same symbol in gold. She looked at the crowd and spoke.
She said, "We are looking for Detective Kel."
Being called a detective was a great feeling, but now was not the time to rejoice.
"That would be me," I said, "Who are you?"
She said, "I am Tanushree, the Chief of the Medical corps. Investigation is your area of expertise so Lord Ishrafil has advised me to assist you. I am at your service."
"Thank you. But this is my first time at a murder scene so you can proceed as usual and I will ask any questions if I have any doubts," I said.
She seemed to ease up a bit. Being in a leadership position comes naturally to some people. She seemed like one of those people. Working under someone would not be the best way to utilize her talents. I stepped on the side and observed the scene before they would move anything.
