Halfway through breakfast it occurred to Darren that Liam may not actually suspect him of murder. The fact that he was letting Darren stay at his home as a guest showed that he didn't even consider him a threat. On the other hand, Jasper definitely had it out for him.

Begrudgingly, Jasper had no choice but to drag Darren with him to work thanks to their predicament. The rogue followed Jasper out front where his grey Nissan Sentra was. It was a rather simple car in his opinion. For some reason, he expected Jasper to drive a red Corvette or something.

"You getting in?" Jasper hissed from the drivers side.

Darren tried to think of something snarky to say, but nothing came to mind, so he silently got in the car and slammed the door as hard as he could

"You did that on purpose!" The Alpha glared.

"Look at you, pointing out the obvious like a big boy." Darren snapped back sarcastically.

"Don't test me."

"Why? Are you just as bad at tests as you are at shutting the fuck up?"

He could tell the man was struggling to reel in his temper now. Turning his attention to the road, Jasper hit the gas harder than necessary and peeled out of the driveway.

For the next five hours, Darren got his first glimpse at what an Alpha's duties were. He tagged along as Jasper checked in on the elderly, interviewed new pack applicants, followed up on neighborhood complaints, and checked in with the Chief of Police to see if there were any developments around town. Unfortunately Darren was forced to sit in the car most of the time, so he didn't learn anything useful.

After a while he picked up on the complete one eighty turn in Jaspers personality. He was like a completely different person when dealing with fellow pack members. Instead of being a prick, or stuck up, or grumpy, he was all smiles and jokes. It annoyed Darren to see how much people enjoyed being around him. If only they knew what kind of asshole he really was...

Eventually they made it to their last stop for the day.  It was one of the more remote cabins tucked a little ways into the woods. There was a long winding dirt trail that led up from the road, with a broken mailbox and plenty of trees blocking their view of the building from where they parked.

Jasper's hands grasped the steering wheel. He looked up towards the cabin, then back at Darren. "I need you to stay in the car."

"Again?" Darren squawked. "Do you know how cramped my legs are?"

"Too bad." Jasper stepped out. "This is a special situation and I don't need you messing anything up."

Darren glanced at the driver side seat and considered smearing mud on it while the guy was gone. A wicked smile crossed his face as he nodded. "Sure."

Jasper glared at him suspiciously, but didn't say a word as he walked towards the cabin. Soon he disappeared from view.

Darren immediately scanned the ground for puddles outside, then spotted a woman standing in the middle of the road.

She was pale, with dark circles around her eyes and tattered clothes. As he watched, she silently stared in the direction of the cabin with tears streaming down her face.

He instantly knew it was a ghost, mostly because of the transparent body, but also because of the cuts on her wrists. As he watched her hover in place, she slowly turned her head in his direction.
