"Hey?" The brunette boy laughed guiltily, scratching the back of his neck.
"What the hell are you doing here?" I asked incredulously.
"Don't get mad, I was just curious about what you were doing and-" I cut him off.
"Tubbo, how much did you hear?"
"Not much." He admitted bowing his head slightly. I sighed.
"I guess since you're here I might as well tell you," I relented, "But you can't repeat this to anyone. Not even Phil." Toby nodded furiously. If I was going to tell someone, I'd rather it was my best friend.
"A few weeks after I moved here, I ended up homeless and on the streets. I thought I was going to die alone, in the cold, until I was found by two men. Their names were Skeppy and The Blade, and they offered to look after me should I help them. I accepted as I had no other choice. It was that or death. I quickly found out they were thieves. At first, I refused to help them... That made them really angry... They would, well for lack of a better word, beat me until I was compliant. This went on about a month before they reached the climax. The biggest heist of all. They wanted to rob the Palace. By this point, my opinion of the city was dreadful, and I'd been about town, hearing the speeches the revolutionaries gave, and, I guess I agreed with their thinking. When we actually went to steal from Dream's Palace, they offered me up as bait to help them getaway. They pushed me off a building and left me to be captured and imprisoned. In my cell, I met a revolutionary named Wilbur. We became friends and eventually escaped together. But we got separated. And then Phil found me, and here I am. Wilbur's who I'm looking for. He promised me a home with him, and also, I need to see if he's okay," I didn't dare look up as I rattled off my life story. Tubbo would hate me, wouldn't he? I'm a criminal. A filthy, lying, criminal. "I can understand if you don't to be my friend anymore..." I finished, looking up at him. The brunette boy was silent for a minute, processing what I'd told him.
I barely had time to react before he barrelled into me, wrapping my considerably taller figure in a bone-crushing hug. I was too stunned to move, standing stiffly as he squeezed my middle.
"Tommy I'm so sorry..." His voice was muffled from his position of his head pressed into me. Unsure what to do, I patted his head awkwardly. "I'll always be your friend, no matter what. I don't care who you are, I'll follow you anywhere."
I didn't expect those words to affect me as much as they did. I tried to choke back the emotion welling in me. I had a friend. A real friend. Someone who cared about me and looked out for me. It felt nice. More than nice.
"Thanks, Tubbo..." I replied quietly. We broke apart as the door to the pub opened again, revealing Fundy and Niki. I sighed, they were probably here to yell at me again. I frowned as the blonde woman's face split into a grin.
"Hi Tommy, I'm so sorry about that, but we couldn't have just told you where Wilbur was out in the open!" She gushed.
"Yeah, anyone could be listening... Anyway, Wilbur did tell us about you, and we're under strict instructions to bring you to him if we found you, and well, we did." Fundy added, ruffling his brown hair. It was odd, other than both men being brunettes, Wilbur and Fundy didn't look alike at all, despite being brothers.
I blinked rapidly, processing what I'd heard.
"You know where Wilbur is?" Niki nodded.
"Come on, we'll take you." I wasted no time in nodding my head profusely, following them as they began to walk. I glanced back, to find Tubbo shifting from foot to foot, scratching his hand nervously. I stopped, walking back towards him.
"What's wrong?" I asked him quietly. He took a deep breath as if preparing himself for something.
"Tommy... I- I want to go with you." His voice wavered slightly. Was he afraid I'd say no?
"Well then what are you waiting for, doofus? Come on!" I called, racing to catch up with Niki and Fundy, this time, Tubbo on my heels.
We walked at a reasonable pace for about twenty minutes before stopping and sliding into a darkened alley. Fundy placed a finger over his lips, motioning us to be silent. I nodded to show I got the message. We lined up behind him, single file. Fundy, then me, then Tubbo, and finally Niki bringing up the rear. I watched in confusion as the younger Soot brother approached a tinted glass window, knocking thrice in a peculiar rhythm. It slid open silently, and the brunette beckoned us forward. I looked back quickly, Niki giving me an encouraging smile. I half returned it, climbing through the small gap.
It wasn't graceful, but I made it through the window in one piece. I waited for Tubbo and Niki before continuing down in the way Fundy had gone. Whoever had opened the window was nowhere to be seen. I smiled slightly as Tubbo latched onto Niki's arm. The blonde woman smiled kindly at him before encouraging him forward.
As we neared the end of the corridor, a pinprick of light appeared, emitting from the left. I could hear voices too. I had no idea of the scale of this place, but it seemed pretty big. The talking got louder as we turned, being fully immersed in the soft candlelight. We eventually reached a door, covered in chipped white paint.
"Let me go first," Fundy said firmly, before knocking and slipping his head round the corner. "Am I okay to come in?" He called slightly louder. The talking paused.
"Depends, on what business?" An incredibly deep voice asked back from inside. Fundy chuckled.
"Oh trust me, Wilbur will love this." I could hear the brunette's smirk as he opened the door fully, revealing me and Tubbo. My eyes went straight to the man seated at the head of the table, a bored look on his face, fluffy brown hair pushed off his forehead and stuck in a black beanie.
"Tommy!" He called, standing up and walking over. I couldn't help but grin.
"Wilbur!"
"Ah, I'm glad you're okay, kid, I was worried about you. Who's this?" He turned to Tubbo.
"Uh hi! I'm Toby, but you can call me Tubbo, I'm Tommy's best friend." The small boy stuttered from behind me.
"Ah, welcome to the team, Tubbo. And best friend? What happened after we got separated?" Will asked me. I made to answer but he snapped his fingers quickly, talking instead.
"Never mind, tell me later, important meeting, you're just in time. This is my crew, I'll introduce you later, this is vital for you all to hear." I stumbled forward as I was ushered into the room. I felt many eyes on me and quickly took a vacant seat, feeling uncomfortable.
"Anyway gentleman," Niki coughed at Wilbur's statement, "And lady. Crucial information has just come in. My sources tell me Dream will be leaving L'Manberg for a few months on unavoidable business." The room exploded with conversation. I assumed this was some kind of revolutionary meeting. Even my eyes widened. Having heard Will talk about the King in our time imprisoned, I knew he never left the city. The fact he was now was extraordinary and unheard of. And for a few months no less!
"When is this happening?" It was the man with the deep voice who'd spoken to Fundy earlier. I looked over as he adjusted his black sunglasses casually, leaning back in his chair, the epitome of laid back.
"We have a few weeks." Winces graced the faces of the men seated around me.
"That's not a lot of time..." Fundy frowned.
"Luckily I already have a plan," Wilbur smirked. From the way he was controlling the meeting, he had to be the leader.
"What?" I was surprised to hear it was Tubbo who asked, on the edge of his seat from excitement.
"Well Tubbo, I think now would be an excellent time to take over and fortify the Palace."
