Today was the day.
Two months. Two months since Dream had left L'Manberg. Just over two months since I had found Wilbur again. Just over two months since I'd joined a revolution.
Tubbo and I had been staying with Wilbur for a few days. I knew Phil would worry, but we had to be there for the moment the King, his Lord, and Kingsguard returned. I'd been working closely with Wilbur, Niki, Fundy, and Eret on the plan.
At first, we would try and negotiate with the faceless man try to claim our independence through brains rather than brawn. But this would most likely be fruitless. Worst case scenario, Wil had told us to prepare for all-out war, an idea that had sent Tubbo's fear spiralling out of control.
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is it. Our final day of certain safety. From here on in, things get tough. I've spent days recruiting a sizeable following to prepare for Dream's return, and now it is time to see if our plan had paid off. Taking the Palace was only step one. Our fight for freedom has not begun as of yet. But soon, I can almost guarantee we will be waving our flag high, and L'manberg will be an independent state!" Roars of assent echoed around the Palace grounds as Wilbur gave his speech from a sculpted quartz balcony. I had to hand it to the beanie-wearing man, he knew how to rally a crowd.
I clapped along loudly, from my position standing between Fundy and Eret.
"Niki, if you would like to inform our army of the logistics, you have the floor." The blonde woman beside Wil nodded determinedly. I couldn't really decipher their relationship. They seemed very close, but whether that meant anything past platonism, I couldn't distinguish.
"Dream will return within the hour. Wilbur and his group will meet to discuss peace without fighting once he arrives. The rest of you must be on guard, as we may need to engage in combat at any given time. For now, you are dismissed." The revolutionaries dispersed to their previously assigned areas, silence ringing out like a funeral chime. Wilbur ushered the group of me, Fundy, Eret, and Tubbo over to him.
"You did well." I caught the brunette complimenting Niki.
"Gentlemen, I trust you know this will not be easy," The curly-haired man began, "But if we stick together, I know we have a chance. Niki, Fundy, you must go prepare our soldiers. Make sure they are stationed accordingly, keep them informed of any developments. Tubbo, Eret, you must gather any spare supplies you can, as discussed. Be back before dawn tomorrow, as then we will know if we need to fight." The respective groups departed, leaving just Wilbur and I.
"Tommy, I'd like you to take a seat with me inside." The beanie-wearing man requested, leading me through the double doors to his temporary office inside the Palace. I admired the polished oak furnishings with awe. Wil offered me a seat, and I took it graciously.
"What's the matter, Wilbur?" I asked him, tentatively.
"Tommy, what I'm about to ask of you may be overstepping a boundary. All this time, I forgot you weren't a man, that you're just a child. But from that day I was thrown in the same cell as you, I knew you were different. Even though you were half-conscious, you had a certain resilience, a gleam in your eye I admire. You gave up the prospect of a stable and safe future out of solidarity for lowly men like myself. You committed yourself to a cause to help gain the independence of people you'd never met before." The brown eyes man looked me dead in the eyes. I liked Wilbur's eyes. He never tried to hide his emotions. He treated me like a grown-up, but was also acknowledging I wasn't fully developed yet. He let me make my own decisions.
"What do you need of me?" I asked determinedly.
"Tommy, I want you to be my right-hand man," I responded without hesitation.
"I accept, without a doubt."
Before Wilbur could express his delight in my answer, the door burst open, Fundy panting heavily, beckoning us forwards.
"They're here!" He gasped, "Troops are keeping them back but Dream is demanding to speak with whoever is in charge." Wilbur nodded at me, and we rose quickly, following the younger Soot brother to the archway that marked the opening in the Blackstone walls that encircled the Palace.
I tried to swallow my fear as I saw Dream, George, and Sap standing there, stoic and imposing. Niki peeled away from talking to Karl to walk by our side, an uncharacteristic steely look on her face.
"Gentlemen." Wilbur greeted, nodding dryly. They completely disregarded his words and instead focused on me.
"Tommy Innitson. We meet again." Dream drawled, monotonously. I didn't respond, shuffling my feet uncomfortably.
"What is this heresy?" George demanded.
"L'Manberg has been governed by barren rule for too long. We are advocating our independence." Wilbur responded.
"Your army is weak, you have no hope of beating us, you're foolish to try." Dream sneered. I could feel his condescending glare, even from behind his mask.
"Foolish? No. Bold, a little arrogant, maybe. But I will not let myself be called foolish by the man who sits by and does nothing while his people die in poverty. We can talk this out like men. We just want independence for L'manberg. You can keep the rule of the rest of the states." I had to admit, Wilbur was good at talking rationally.
"If you think we'll hand over our rightful land just because you asked-" George spoke up for the first time.
"Independence!" Wilbur yelled out, cutting him off. "Independence or death. If we get no revolution, we want nothing. We would rather die than give into you, and your listless rule." I was struck by the passion in his voice.
"You cannot hope to beat us in combat, surely?" Sap chuckled patronisingly.
"No, but we're willing to die for this! Our hearts lie with our cause!" I surprised myself by calling out a strong response. Wilbur smiled encouragingly, and Niki laid a comforting hand on my shoulder. Dream didn't seem to appreciate my statement.
"You will surrender or we will have war. You have one day. I want to see white flags, white flags outside these walls by dawn, or you are dead!"
And that was how I helped start a revolution.
