"Tommy Innitson, you were placed in custody three days ago under charges of theft and trespassing. Whilst little evidence of the first count is available, members of the Kingsguard found you in the grounds of the Palace, a restricted area," I studied the man reading out my charges, "How do you plead?"
Well, how the fuck was I supposed to answer that? Sure, I did steal that weird Mellohi thing. And yeah, I was in the Palace. But am I really just going to say, 'Ah yup, I was, sentence me to death now!'?
"That's... That's not the full story-" The man with the impossibly straight brown hair and white-edged glasses, Lord George, cut across me.
"We didn't ask for the full story, we asked how you plead." His voice was silky, and if I wasn't in such a tense situation, I would have found it relaxing.
"I- Uh..." I mumbled, visibly shrinking back in my chair as the gaze of the two men bore into me.
"Your plead, Mr Innitson." The head of the Kingsguard, the one they called Sap, snarled.
"G-guilty." I could see Wilbur's reaction in my mind's eye. He would roll his eyes and call me stupid. If only I had his confidence... I could pace the room, as I whittled down their arguments with facts and intellectual language. Alas, I wasn't Wilbur. I was Tommy, the scared, little boy from the Outer.
"And are you, Tommy, aware that the punishment for such is death?" I hated the contrast in George and Sap's voice. Though they were both on the same side, George's voice was warm, and comforting, whereas Sap's was cold, like an icicle had struck my brain, rendering me mute and unable to defend myself.
"I am, but I didn't have a choice it was either this or poverty, Skeppy and The Blade, they're the real crimi-" I tried to protest, shifting in my oak chair uncomfortably.
"We're not here to discuss third-party involvement. We are here to discuss your fate. And if I were in your position, I'd be as compliant as possible so that we don't have further reason to dislike you." The darker-haired man threatened. I shuddered at the poison in his voice. He meant it. Every word.
"Sap, call him in." George sighed, leaning his elbow on the desk in front of him, resting his head in his hands. The other man, tugged on the white fabric wrapped around his head, tightening it, before nodding and exiting the room.
There were no words exchanged between Lord George and I as we waited for him to come back, I simply sat running my finger along the wood grain of the chair, thinking what to do. It was safe to say I came up with no ideas.
I looked up as the door opened again. Sap had returned, this time not alone. The man that swept in the room behind him held a demeanour of smugness. His very presence in the room made me want to curl into a ball, quivering in fear. An aura of menace. A long, green cloak swept the ground behind him as he practically strutted to the vacant seat in the middle of Sap and Lord George. When he pulled the chair out and looked down, regarding me with what I assumed was disgust, I realised who he was.
I couldn't see his face, but that was what consolidated my theory. The man looking at me had a circle of white held across his face with string. A mask. The mask bore little insignia, simply two dots and a curved line, making an innocently terrifying smile.
Dream.
I was in trouble now. Wilbur had told me how the King never showed up to public events if avoidable, even with his mask denoting his anonymity. If the King himself had shown up to my, quote-unquote trial, something was wrong. I barely dared breathe as he began to speak.
"Mr Innitson, I am not one to dwell on idle chit-chat so I will make my point clear and concise. You were seen in the Palace Grounds on the 23rd of this month and promptly placed in a cell. Your presence there alone is a crime. That very night, my vault was broken into and much of my gold and diamonds were stolen," Wait, diamonds? I knew the rumours of Dream's wealth were large, but diamonds... That was a whole other level. What had I been dragged into? "However, this pales in comparison to my other accusation to you. When I heard the news of the robbery, I rushed to my office, to find the window smashed in and an object removed from my desk. That object is the result of months of research and experimentation, and I think you took it."
I was taken aback by his voice. I expected it to be growling and jarring, instead, his words flowed like a river, blending into an overall pleasant sound. Of course, he was the King of my world and accusing me of theft and probably about to sentence me to death, but I had to admire the way he spoke.
"What is it?" I blurted out, unable to control myself. I knew he was talking about Mellohi.
"Nothing that concerns you. What concerns you, and your continued life, is whether you took it." If I could see the King's eyes, no doubt I'd be terrified. I was still, even just looking at the happy face that stared at me. It was unnerving to see such a childlike, jokey mask that hid a ruthless and unforgiving man.
"I didn't take it." I was a terrible liar. I knew this. My family knew it, even Wilbur knew it. So I don't know why I bothered even trying to lie to the King. It was like I actually wanted to be put to death, a live execution in the Town Square. Obviously, I didn't, but my reactions and instincts seemed to be saying so.
"Tch, I do not tolerate liars, Mr Innitson. I think you took it. I think you squirreled it away before Sap found you, and I think your head is a reasonable price." Oh shit.
I watched Dream get up, cloak swirling behind him as he exited the room, the large spruce door slamming satisfyingly. I looked at the remaining men, their faces set. Sap had an unpleasant grin plastering his features, and Lord George seemed to have a hint of a smile playing along his lips.
"Tommy Innitson, we find you guilty of crimes against the crown and hereby sentence you to death. Your execution will be held in two days in the Town Square of L'Manberg to make an example of you to the public. You have the right to a last meal, and for us to notify your family of your demise, should they be unaware. We will come for you at sunrise on the 1st of the new month."
I had two days to live.
