i did my best to fix my runny makeup but it was a lost cause no matter how hard i tried, but at least the crying had sobered me up a bit. i straightened out my dress with the palms of my shaky hands and tucked a stray piece of hair behind my ear, taking a deep breath to prepare myself to go find chase. as soon as i left the safety of the well-lit bathroom i realized i was still a lot drunker than i had convinced myself i was, my eyes refusing to focus as i searched the crowds for chases face.

-whoa there, is everything alright? i tried my best to see who i had walked into but then i recognized his sweet, familiar voice. i wanted to say something back but it was like the words wouldn't leave my mouth. payton quickly saw the state i was in and bent down so our eyes were level, a worried look on his face,
let's get you to chase, okay? he said calmly but i could tell he sensed something was wrong by the gentle way he handled me, like i was a fragile figurine made of glass with a deep crack right through the middle. he wrapped a comforting arm over my shoulders and took me to the slightly less crowded kitchen where he grabbed a bottle of water from a fridge and handed it to me like i was a toddler, but i appreciated it. all the drinking and crying had left me thirstier than i knew and i drank the whole bottle in nearly one go as i sat on the kitchen countertop. he helped me down and started leading me through the crowds, in search of chase. he wasn't in any of the open areas and i was starting to think he left after seeing me and elmo but as payton and i made it to some of the back rooms i hadn't noticed earlier my hope of finding him came back. payton nudged open one of the doors in a hallway of four and smoke escaped from the room like clouds, none of the people in there smoking in a circle were who we were looking for and payton asked if anyone had seen chase. he talked to the strangers while doing his best to keep an eye on me but i slipped away and left the room, not wanting to be anymore of a burden on him. i walked up to the next door but froze right before i could turn the handle, a sudden wave of unease filling me. the kind of feeling you get the split second before something bad happens. suddenly, the door was opened from the inside and i nearly crashed into chase. he froze as soon as he saw me and backed into the room, creating a distance between us that felt unnatural. i closed the door behind me before leaning against it and sliding down to a crouching position on the floor. the quiet hostility in the room made me uncomfortable and after a minute of cold silence i couldn't take it anymore and blurted out the question that had been on my mind all night.
-what were you doing when you left before the party?
