In Xiao Zhan's life, things didn't work out the way they were supposed to. At the age of 28, he had actually achieved everything he wanted. At that time, when he was 20, he made a five-year plan and had achieved everything on that list. But then half a year ago everything changed when his girlfriend suddenly left him. She had fallen in love with another man and left Zhan shortly after.
Since then, Zhan's life was on a downward spiral. The sudden separation from the woman he loved tore the ground from under his feet. They had been a couple for six years and nothing suggested to him that she was missing anything. Even with marriage, she still wanted to wait. But now he knew why.
Because, when his girlfriend broke up with him, she told him that she was never sure if he was really the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. She also found Zhan and their lives together boring and that he was far too focused on his career as a graphic artist. For him, what she said was not just like a resounding slap in the face, but a kick that knocked him to the ground and hasn't let him get up again so far.
Things got even worse when he found out a few days ago that his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend are engaged and plan to get married soon. In addition, his friends were also already annoyed by him and his constant whining and ignored his contact attempts. "They just don't understand how much I suffer." He told himself again and again.
But also at work things went more than just badly for him. Because in the last weeks and months, he did not deliver good graphics anymore. No matter what he tried to submit, everything was rejected and now his job was at stake. Because his boss told him very clearly that if he didn't pull himself together and deliver good results again, he would kick him out of the company.
And he didn't even want to think about how his parents would react if he told them that his job was at risk. They were already disappointed enough in him that he lost his girlfriend. For years, they had been bugging him to finally marry her before she found someone else. And when exactly that happened, he received no comfort from his parents, but blame.
To his disappointment, he had gotten a new colleague at work, who talked all day long about a dancer he thinks is so great. Zhan had no idea who this dancer should be and he didn't care. But that didn't stop Yu Bin, his colleagues, from telling Zhan every single detail about this dancer whose name he keeps forgetting.
In addition, he has now got new neighbors. A young family with a baby that cries so loud all night long that Zhan can't sleep at night. As if the neighbor above him wasn't bad enough, with his nightly jumping around the apartment. However, Zhan knew that this neighbor only did this because he has OCD and can't help it. But that didn't mean that it would bother him any less.
And with all this, Zhan was not surprised that his work suffered. But of course his boss didn't understand that. After all, he pays Zhan for the work and if he doesn't deliver it, he is useless to the company.
That morning, as Zhan was sitting over a graphic once again, trying to concentrate on his work after a sleepless night, Yu Bin once again got on his nerves about the dancer he likes so much. "It is such a pity that he has never performed in front of his fans here in Beijing. I would so much like to see him live. Not only on television. It's not the same as seeing him on stage." Said Yu Bin.
"Ah, very interesting." Said Zhan, who was totally annoyed again.
"But now there are rumors that he might have a gig in Beijing soon. Most people probably go there because they want to hear him sing. But I'm only interested in his dancing."
"Mmm, I see."
"If he should really come here, then I will buy a ticket, no matter how expensive it is and even if that means I have to stand in line with his fan girls to get a ticket."
"Well, buy a ticket online."
"Unfortunately his tickets are not sold online. You have to buy them directly at a ticket sale."
"So so."
"If he's really coming here, I'll invite you to his show. It's actually a concert, but that doesn't matter. Then you'll see what I mean and why I'm so excited about him."
Zhan raised his head, looked Yu Bin straight in the eyes and asked confusedly, "Why me?"
"Well, it might distract you for at least one evening." Explained Yu Bin.
"And you think a concert by a guy, or his dancing, or no idea what, will help me?"
"Sure. You should see how great his performances are. And there are always fireworks afterwards. And everybody likes fireworks."
"I'm pretty sure not everybody likes fireworks. But even if I do, it doesn't mean I'm going to spend an evening between teenage girls who adore their idol, crying and screaming, just so I can watch fireworks afterwards."
"Stop being so negative all the time. I bet you'd like it."
"Sure, why not? I'd just be deaf after all those little girls' screams."
"It would only be one night, and you haven't got anything better to do anyway, since..."
"Don't even say it. And now we should finally focus on our work. I don't want to get in trouble with the boss again just because I messed up another graphic." Said Zhan and put his earphones in his ears to listen to music.
When his boss came into their office an hour later, he looked at Zhan's graphics and was satisfied with his work for the first time in a long time. "Just a few tweaks here and there and then it's great." He said to Zhan.
Zhan was relieved because it took him several days of work. "Oh yeah you two. If your artwork is chosen by the client, there's a great bonus. But I'm not going to tell you what it is yet." Said the boss as he left the office.
Since Zhan knows his boss well, he knows it won't be money. The last bonus Zhan got was for a visit to a star hairdresser. Zhan was very happy about this, but only until he went to the hairdresser and looked in the mirror afterwards. This oh so great hairdresser had given him a brush haircut with a long strand. And his boss burst into laughter when he saw Zhan's haircut. Zhan walked around for three months wearing nothing but a baseball cap so no one would see his hairstyle.
Another bonus was two tickets to an escape room. Zhan had been there with his ex-girlfriend. But they never got past the second mystery because his girlfriend had gotten a call from her best friend and they wasted the time they had to talk about a few new shoes and jewelry. Zhan was so angry that the two of them argued all evening about how much he hated the fact that she cared more about talking on the phone than spending time with him.
And when he thought back to his very first bonus, Zhan immediately started feeling sick to his stomach again. Swimming with sharks was less fun than he had expected. Mainly because of this tiny little shark that bit Zhan in the butt and the bite had to be stitched with three stitches. The coach of the sharks had almost laughed his head off when Zhan was bitten by this baby shark.
And because of all his experiences with the bonus from the boss, Zhan had become very careful and always got stomach ache when he talked about a bonus again. And this time it was no different. Unlike Yu Bin who was totally excited, Zhan was just hoping it wouldn't be something crazy again.
