Until the evening, Zhan and Yu Bin were still sitting in the office, revising the graphics once more, according to the specifications and wishes of their boss. Yu Bin had already left half an hour ago, while Zhan had to wait until his boss had a new look at the graphics. But now that his boss was finally satisfied, Zhan was finally able to finish his work.
When he left the office and went outside the door, he shook his head in annoyance. It rained heavily for the second time this week and once again Zhan had not brought an umbrella. And because his car was still not repaired, he had to walk to the bus stop.
The big raindrops were whipped into his face by a strong fresh wind. His clothes had been soaked through in just five minutes. And the bus was just driving away from under his nose again. Freezing, he sat down in the bus stop and waited for the next bus, which would not arrive for another 30 minutes.
And as if being soaked, freezing and tired wasn't enough, he also saw his ex-girlfriend across the street, who had just come out of a jewelry store with her fiancé and was smiling broadly. Their eyes met briefly, and while Zhan at least tried to smile, she glanced at him only with a judgmental look, and then walked on hand in hand with her fiancé.
Zhan would have loved to shout after her, that she could screw him. But since she probably wouldn't have heard it anyway, and if she had, she probably wouldn't have cared anyway, he saved himself the energy and embarrassment and kept quiet. But not without cursing softly to himself that he still would love her even now and that this makes him a miserable poor sausage.
"Maybe you should just start dating again instead of living in your memories." Said the woman next to him. Zhan looked over at her and laughed.
"Zoey Meng, I can't believe it. What are you doing here?" He asked his old friend from school.
"I'm waiting for the bus, you know. Oh, and I just got divorced and now I live with my parents again. I wonder which one of us is more miserable now?"
"Do you still love your ex-husband?"
"God no. No way."
"Then I'm more pathetic. Because even though I know my ex-girlfriend is about to marry her boyfriend, who she's only been with for six months, I still love her."
"I don't think it's love, I think it's more the hanging on to the past. Damn you are Xiao Zhan, you were the crush of almost every girl in school and you look even hotter now than you did then. Get back in the saddle and just get a new girlfriend." Said Zoey Meng.
"I have no time or desire to date. Besides, it's only been 6 months and I've been with her for 6 years."
"But that won't stop her from marrying the new man by her side soon."
"Tell me something new."
"Mhhh, my parents think my ex-husband cheated on me regularly only because I was not a good wife and did not give him a child. Is that something new?"
"Um, my parents hate me, too, because it didn't work out with me and my ex. They think I didn't want to propose to her. My ex always wanted to wait to get married. She told me afterwards that she was never sure I was the right guy for her."
"Ouch, that's rough. I guess we both had bad luck with our choice. I think you started dating your ex at the same time I started dating my ex, right?"
"Mmm, right before graduation from university."
"Right. I remember when we met in that restaurant and we all had to sit at the same table because they messed up the reservations. And your ex was so jealous when we talked about our school days."
"That was just an act of her. She told me the same night that she thought she had to react that way and so she pretended to be jealous."
"Really? She got weird ideas."
"Mm. But she had always been a little strange. I guess that's what I liked about her, too. She wasn't like everyone else."
"I see. That's how I felt about my ex-husband. He made a real effort back then and made me believe I was special. And he'd had affairs at that time. He told me that he could only be a good husband for me because he could also let off steam with other women. I really have no idea what he meant by that, but when he said that, it was clear to me that I wanted a divorce.
"I can understand that. Who would want to be married to a person who is disloyal and claims, that he is just because of that a good spouse?" Zhan asked.
He was happy to meet Zoey again after such a long time. Even at school, the two had always been good friends. But since they went to different universities, the contact got lost little by little. Only once shortly before his graduation he had seen her again and that had been just a coincidence.
They chatted lively for quite a while about the past and present until the bus finally arrived. On the bus they talked about their future plans and exchanged their phone numbers. Zhan hoped he would see Zoey again soon and that they would have more time to talk. Maybe they could go for a drink and revive their old times a little.
When Zhan left the bus, he luckily didn't have far to go to his apartment building. He passed a billboard that was already advertising the upcoming event. "Come and celebrate with us for three days and two nights. Be there when the hottest stars and starlets come out and entertain you live on four different stages! Get your tickets now!" It's written on the billboard. In the background you can see a picture of the area where the event takes place.
Years ago, Zhan wanted to go there once, but he had just started working and couldn't afford the tickets back then. And after that he just didn't feel like it anymore. But also because his ex girlfriend didn't like the event. She had of course been there before and claimed that it was too loud, too crowded and completely overrated.
Bai Shu, one of Zhan's friends and a journalist, had invited Zhan to this event last year. But Zhan was still with his ex-girlfriend and she had been against it. She complained that she didn't want to be alone for a whole weekend and so Zhan cancelled with a heavy heart. Bai Shu had been angry with him for weeks and Zhan had to give him many meals and drinks to make up for it.
What annoyed Zhan most later, after the cancellation of Bai Shu, was that his girlfriend did not want to be alone on the weekend. But only a month later, she had no problem leaving Zhan alone for a whole week when she visited her girlfriend in Hong Kong. She hadn't even contacted Zhan that week. That was okay for her, but he wasn't allowed to do anything without her.
In retrospect, Zhan had to admit to himself that his relationship was anything but great and he should have realized earlier how badly they fit together. But he had never wanted to admit that to himself. And even though he was aware of it now, he still missed her.
When Zhan came to his apartment, he went into his bathroom, took off his wet clothes, threw them in the washing machine and took a hot shower. He then went to his bedroom, put some clothes on and then stared at the boxes that had been standing in the corner for four months waiting to be unpacked.
Zhan lives in the small two-room apartment that he had to find after it was over with his girlfriend. Before that, the two of them lived together in a big bright spacious apartment. But after the separation, the rent was simply not affordable for him alone and so he had to look for a new apartment. Since then the last 4 boxes are in the corner of his bedroom.
