Draco couldn't believe it. And telling Blaise had been a mistake.
It was the two of them up in their room, Crabbe and Goyle were out making up their own work while Draco and Blaise finished up an essay for glass. They had been chatting while they wrote, joking, asking for advice on their papers, and eventually, they got to the subject of the Yule Ball. Draco had asked him first who he was going to take, but Blaise hadn't made up his mind yet.
"What about you, Draco? Got anyone in mind?"
Malfoy hesitated, Pansy Parkinson's name on his lips, but he ended up muttering, "(Y/N) (L/N)."
Blaise's eyes went wide. "The Hufflepuff that Cedric saved from the last challenge?"
Draco nodded with a small smile. "She's been helping me with Magical Creatures homework, Blaise. (Y/N)'s actually quite nice. It's hard to have a bitter exterior around her."
His smile fell when his friend smirked. "What's that cheeky look for?"
"If I didn't know any better, I'd say you've fallen for (L/N)."
His cheeks flared red, Blaise letting out a laugh. "So it's true then! What will Parkinson think?" he teased his friend, but that smile remained with a shake of his head.
"I guess so, and you will not breathe a word about this to Parkinson, got it?"
Blaise raised his hands in surrender, returning to his paper. "I won't tell a soul."***
Since the last challenge, (Y/N) hadn't been able to keep Cedric out of her mind. It only made her more confused about her feelings for him, especially knowing that he liked Cho, and had gotten over her.
The more time she spent with Draco, the easier he made it to get over Cedric.
The two were down by Hagrid's hut, getting an extra lesson about Hippogriffs. Since Buckbeak's disappearance, he had gotten another one for the younger classes to learn about them. Draco had told her about the incident during their third year, and how he had regretted much about what he said. (Y/N) had secretly asked Hagrid if he could give them a private lesson. The groundskeeper had been hesitant at first, but when she told him how Draco had some guilt about what happened, he agreed.
"Now, let the hippogriff come to you, Draco. And remember to bow," Hagrid instructed.
Hesitantly, Draco nodded and when the animal approached him, he bowed. The hippogriff bowed in return before taking a step forward to sniff his hair. Malfoy tensed up, and (Y/N) laughed.
"You're doing great, Draco!" she called, and the hippogriff backed away.
Hagrid clapped. "Well done! Now, they could use a good brushing. I'll leave that to you two while I make some tea."
(Y/N) came over with another brush and handed it to him. "You did great," she praised, starting to brush his mane.
He was hesitant before he started brushing the coat of the animal. "It was surreal, but it's a good start." Draco smiled, giving the hippogriff a soft pat.
The two talked quietly, brushing out the animal, who neighed in appreciation. Hagrid came back with tea, and the three sat in the grass while the hippogriff was fed. They laughed and listened to the groundskeeper's stories, and even Draco apologized for his behavior the year prior. He was grateful that Hagrid forgave him.
They were in the middle of Hagrid telling them about Aragog, and how he found him when Cedric came down the hill alone. (Y/N) had been the one to notice him. He had been hanging out with Cho a lot, so seeing him without her hugging his arm was new for her. Eventually, he came up to the three of them, a determined look on his face.
"Afternoon, Cedric," Hagrid greeted.
Cedric nodded. "Afternoon Hagrid. (Y/N), can I speak to you? Alone?"
She looked at Draco, and he gave a slight nod. She stood and they walked up the path a bit, away from the other two, who had resumed their conversation.
"How have you been since that second challenge?" he asked first, and (Y/N) shrugged.
"Been alright. Bit jarring coming too and seeing you're in the Black Lake, but I've adjusted back into my schedule for school thus far."
Cedric nodded in understanding. It was quietly awkward between them before he sighed and bit the bullet. "What's going on between you and Draco?"
(Y/N) was stunned. "We're friends, Cedric. Why?"
"Because I think I still like you." he breathed softly. His words shook her to her core. After all the heartache he put her through, insisting he was over her and dating Cho, he was going to come to her and admit that? "I've missed you so much, baby. And seeing you with him..."
"You're jealous," she stated simply, taking a step away from him. "I'm sorry Cedric, but I can't return those feelings. I've finally gotten over you. Besides, I think I actually like someone else now." she glanced back down the path.
Cedric nodded. "I understand. See you around, (L/N)." With that, he stalked back up the path.
Ouch. He had never called her that in that tone of voice before. But it didn't quite matter, because as soon as she arrived back where they had been having tea, Hagrid was saddling the hippogriff. "Fancy a ride?" Draco asked her with a smile, and her smile returned.
She had definitely made the right decision.
Do you think it's easy being of the jealous kind?
