Year 847

Age 12

(Y/n POV)

The rest of hand to hand training went fairly well, considering Eren, Reiner and you were pretty much crippled from Annie's moves. Reiner did teach you how to throw an opponents weight better and use their momentum against them. Even though Reiner could easily slaughter you and Eren in wrestling, he held back a considerable amount and allowed you two to learn what to do. You never had an older brother but you imagined they acted just like Reiner. You couldn't thank Reiner enough for teaching you but he just chuckled and told you it was no big deal. He also reminded you that your real challenge would be when Annie trained you tonight.

You suppose he's right.

Now that all the training had ended for the day you had some free time to do whatever you wanted, you still were practically limping around after receiving a devastating kick to the leg so you decided to go the camps makeshift attempt at a library and read a book describing the functions of the ODM gear to see if you couldn't figure out how to improve with it. The building was mostly empty except for a few straggled cadets, You found a book about Odm that was in pretty okay shape and limped over to a table in the corner of the library and sat down letting out a little groan, finally getting off your sore leg. After about 20 minutes you heard someone sounding frustrated and then heard footsteps coming your way which caused you to look up from your book to see a cadet standing at the other end of the table. He was fairly tall, his hair went down a little past his forehead, he looked upset and his hazel colored eyes were shooting daggers at you. You couldn't figure out why, but for some reason he looked similar to a horse as if that made any sense.

?: "What's the big idea? You think you can just hog the best book all to yourself?" He said it with such irritation that it annoyed you.

It's not like you tried to upset anyone.

Y/n: "What are you talking about?" You replied unimpressed.

?: "You took the best Odm book! Then ran to the corner like some kind of introvert!" His tone made it obvious that he thought he was completely in the right.

Y/n: "Look. You can read this with me if you want. Just stop treating me like I'm some underground thug." You maintained eye contact through the entire sentence. You felt uncharacteristically confident in your words. After all you were just reading a book and got berated for it.

The cadet looked a little more irritated at you for a moment, then dropped his irritated expression and replaced it with a small yet smug smile.

?: "Hey you're right, maybe we got off on the wrong foot. After all, if you're needing that book you're probably in serious need of guidance." He extended his hand out. "The names Jean."

You decided to look past the "Needing guidance." comment and shook his hand.

Y/n:  "I'm Y/n." You replied.

Jean: "Well Y/n, its your lucky day." He stated pulling out a chair and sitting next to you. "I'll teach you how to be a pro with the Odm. Here's a trick for you, a way to conserve gas is to use your momentum and let it carry you further before you use some more gas."

The two of you went over that book for two more hours. You had to admit, even though Jean was kind of a smug, confident jerk sometimes, he did know his stuff, which was very surprising given how Odm training had only started recently. He taught you all kind of ways to preserve gas and to go faster.

The time was cut short when it was time to go back to the cafeteria, so you two parted ways and as you went to put the book back you saw a tall girl about to leave the library. The girl had a very strong resemblance to Nora except she looked twice as irritated, It was almost scary how similar she looked to her. That's when it clicked.
