Virgil's POV:
Slowly my vision started to clear and I groaned at the throbbing pain in my head and throat. I looked around my surroundings to find myself in some sort of cave. Logan was nearby occupying himself with whatever he was mixing together. I grunted as I tried to sit up which got his attention, and in a matter of seconds he was next to me and pushing me back down.
"Don't sit up, just lay down" he said softly and I opened my mouth to speak "I wouldn't try talking either, your throat is still healing" he told me which caused me to close my mouth once more. "You've been unconscious for around 5 days, well really you've been slipping in and out of consciousness. We came across this cave a day or so after you were attacked and have been camping here since then." Logan explained and my eyes widened slightly at how long I was out. "I know you have questions so write them down" he gave me the pen with the pad of paper and I started to write down.
"Where are the others?" I asked,
"They're out guarding the perimeter and Patton has been tracking an animal that's been nearby for some time now" he explained and I nodded "I should let them know you're awake" he added and got up to leave, some time later he came back with all three of them who swarmed me in a group hug.
"Oh thank god you're alright! We were all so worried about you" Reina enthusiastically claimed and they all nodded.
"How's our situation?" I wrote down and Reina snorted to herself to keep the mood light hearted.
"Always straight to the point with you, we're managing on supplies, although food is starting to become a problem." She told me and I nodded to myself.
"When I get better I'll be hunting with you guys and food won't be a problem" I told them and Roman's eyes seemed to widen like he remembered something.
"Oh! I have something for you!" He told me and went through our stuff to pull out the best thing ever. A bow and quiver filled with arrows. "After you were attacked, I stripped Chad and Lola of whatever supplies I could grab. I managed to get her bow and arrows before we ran off." He explained as he handed them to me and I lightly traced my fingers over the metal feeling a lot better knowing I had a weapon I really knew my way around and smiled to myself.
"Thank you" I scribbled onto the paper and lazily hugged him the best I could while lying down. I turned to Logan and continued to write down what I needed to say. "When do you think I'll be ok to get out and hunt?" I asked,
"If I had proper equipment with me it would be easier to tell, but my estimate is at least 4-5 days if we treat you consistently, keep you hydrated, and have you take a lot of fluids" he told me and I nodded.
"Is there anything else we need to do for today?" Patton asked now changing the subject.
"No, we're all done at the moment, after we eat we'll make sure to get setup for whoever is night watch tonight" Logan answered and went back to whatever he was mixing when I first woke up. "Roman if you could start to prepare our rations with Reina, and Patton if we need to, can you fill up any empty water bottles in the creek?" Logan gave out orders with that soft and gentle voice of his. They all went to do their tasks and I watched Logan move around the make-shift workspace set up. He poured whatever he was mixing into one of the lids of our water bottles and handed it to me, "This will help soothe your throat and get rid of some discomfort or pain" he told me, I nodded in understanding as I grabbed the liquid. I slowly sipped whatever it was down and winced at the pain of the substance going down my throat. I then scrunched up my face at the unpleasant taste while downing whatever was left. I handed the lid back to Logan while I shook my head in disgust and shivered. I glared playfully at Logan who watched my reaction with a small smirk on his face.
"We're ready" Roman announced, Logan turned his attention onto the others and his expression changed back into one of focus.
"I'll help you over there?" He told me, making it sound like a question. I nodded to show him that it was ok and he bent over slightly to partially lift me up and readjusted me to stand. He helped me walk over to where we were all sat down and wouldn't leave me till he deemed I was as comfortable as I could get.
"Logan I'm fine" I scribbled down slightly annoyed at him babying me.
"You sure?" He asked and I shot him a look, he backed off after that reluctantly and I lifted the hand made tea to my lips. We sat in silence and even I had to say that the silence was going to be the absolute death of me if nothing changed, not like I could say anything about it being temporarily mute to let my throat heal.
"Alright I can't with the silence, I got something that'll keep us occupied" Reina interrupted causing Patton to jump slightly in surprise at the sudden noise. She dug around in her bag and pulled out her uno set that her aunt gave her. I huffed out a laugh in disbelief that she somehow managed to sneak it in.
"You actually brought it?" I asked her, she chuckled in amusement while nodding to confirm.
"Of course I brought it!" The trio just watched the scene utterly confused on what was happening.
"Is there something we're missing?" Patton asked curiously although I could see a glint of a joy when he saw the deck of cards.
"Before we left for the capitol and my aunt was saying goodbye she gave me these uno cards, a little parting gift to remember her by" Reina started and handed them to me to shuffle. "Virge knows about them because to distract him before we got our rating scores we played a few rounds." She explained. I gave everyone their cards not long after and we started to play.
"Reina's gift got me thinking, did any of you guys bring something with you back from home?" Logan asked and played his card.
"I did, my... twin brother... gave me something before I left" Roman said uneasily and I looked to him in concern knowing that was a hard subject for him.
"Remus?" Patton asked in surprise and Ro nodded, he got his bag and dug through it pulling out a patch meant to be sewn into clothing. He handed it around and my eyes widened at the familiar symbol.
"I've seen this before" I wrote down quickly and Roman looked at me in shock.
"Where? Do you know what it means?" He asked and I fumbled clumsily to undo my pin and hold it out for them. He looked at it and gasped at seeing the identical symbol in a part of the pin.
"This is the symbol of the Light Sides" I started and Logan's eyes bugged out of his head and snatched the pin from Roman to examine it himself.
"Oh my stars it is! How in the world did you get this?!" He asked.
"It caught my eye in the market, the lady there explained briefly what it was and insisted I take it for free" I wrote down and showed them. "How do you know it?" I asked myself and he continued to examine it in awe.
"I read all about it when I stumbled on a book in my families library just a few years ago. It was in the back and looked like it had never been touched, it explained and told every story, legend, and historical event about the light sides." Logan explained. "But why would Remus give Roman the sign of Creativity?" He asked and pondered. "And it's odd that at least three of us know something about the light sides or well... two of us and Roman just owns something related to it." Logan continued reaching into the inside of his jacket to pull out a similar patch to Roman's except it was Logic's symbol. "My mother gave this to me after I came to her to tell her about that book, said that one day I would understand what it meant and to never ever loose it or leave it behind" he finished. Patton looked at the patch and my pin himself and smiled.
"Hey! I got one too!" He exclaimed and pulled it out of his own bag, revealing the symbol of Morality.
"This is really weird" I scribbled down and Logan nodded in agreement. After several minutes of silence his eyes widened and he hunched over to look at the patches and pins again.
"There's no way..." he mumbled and reached up to rub his eyes pulling them away to see nothing was different.
"What?" Roman asked concerned for his boyfriend, Patton also having a similar worried expression.
"In that book, one of the legends I read... it talked about the light sides inhuman 'abilities' and their most loyal followers. They called themselves the mind union. In the legend they mentioned that even though the sides were mortal, their souls were not, so when they died their soul would be reincarnated into a new being with no recollection of their memories in their past lives until they gained their birthright as the true leaders of the mind-scape. It was the unions sworn duty to find the reincarnations and ominously set them on their way to achieve their destiny. How they would do this, is to give the reincarnation the side they represented their symbol in the form of a patch, badge, pin, drawing, etcetera. I thought it was a stupid little fairytale meant to put kids to sleep because of how absurd it was but now... I'm not so sure" He told us and my jaw dropped wide open, everyone else having a similar reaction.
"No way, we're light sides?!" Patton shrieked and smiled in disbelief. "That's insane!"
"But my brother gave me my patch... said that it was important, he seemed really panicked and kept muttering nonsense about how he wasn't expecting this, and that it was too soon." Roman intervened "There's no way REMUS, is apart of the union!" Roman continued and I mentally agreed. From what he told me about his brother, I'd find that hard to believe too.
"My mother is one too... so does that make my father one as well?" Logan asked himself.
"It was my granny who gave mine to me, it was the last thing she gave me before she... before she passed and made me promise her to take great care of it no matter what happened" Patton explained. "So she must have given it to me to make sure I got it before she passed." He concluded.
"But I don't have a specific sign... however that woman seemed glad to see me and wouldn't let me pay for it at all" I intervened and picked up my pin to try and see if there was something I was missing. "So what side am I?" I asked and they all shrugged going back to try and process the huge load of information dumped on all of us. I strained my eyes to take in every detail but nothing stood out to me, the side of anxiety's symbol stood out to me for some reason and it seemed familiar even though I couldn't tell why. Then something seemed to click in my brain and I dropped the notebook and pen out of shock and realization.
"Virgil?" Reina asked me, I just ignored her and frantically patted myself down trying to see where it was. I whipped it out and showed it to them. It was a handkerchief gifted to me on my 17th birthday that... Remy... handmade himself. In the corner was an embroidered storm-cloud and an exact replica of anxiety's symbol.
"My best friend Remy, remember from my interview? He gifted this to me on my 17th birthday and handmade this himself. He said that it would be very useful to me someday and that I had to treat it carefully." I explained on the paper doing my best to write down as fast as I could. "I represent anxiety" I concluded and Reina looked at all of us now having an existential crisis and reliving every moment of our lives up to now.
"So y'all are reincarnated souls... with possibly inhuman abilities you've never known about until now... dang! why can't I be cool like that!" She joked wanting to lighten the mood and pull us out of our thinking. I smiled at her, giving her a mute nod of gratitude for her small act.
"Well now that I think about it, it makes sense" Logan started pocketing his own patch, Roman and Patton following his actions shortly after and I clipped my pin securely to my jacket while also putting away my handkerchief. "Roman can make practically anything from practically nothing, for example those traps set up he made from god knows what" Logan
"Hey yeah!" Roman agreed
"I don't think any of us need an explanation of how I'm Logic, and Patton has always had a strict moral code and been a moral compass for us." Logan added. "Although Virgil as Anxiety surprises me slightly." He finished
"Not me, Virgil and I both have pretty bad Anxiety, he went into a full blown panic attack when his rating came out." Reina explained and I nodded to confirm "Also he knows when something is off. I'm pretty sure he's shown that one pretty well, and from what I remember about Virgil telling me about Anxiety, it was also Anxiety's duty to make sure the others never went too far." She finished and the others nodded in agreement.
"That makes more sense, oh by the way, uno" Logan said and smirked as we all gasped in shock at his now singular card in his hand. "After this game we should turn in for the night and whoever's turn it is to be night-watch will be prepared" Logan explained, it was obvious Logan won the game, and tonight it was Roman and Reina's turn to stay up. I felt uncomfortable and guilty due to the fact that Logan and Patton insisted I was comfortable leaving them with practically nothing to sleep on. But I was basically helpless against them and they repeatedly told me they would be fine and that I needed a proper rest. It took me awhile to fall asleep since I'd been unconscious basically the whole day, but eventually I slipped into a light sleep, waiting to be woken up the next day.??? POV:
I chuckled darkly looking at the footage of the group, so these were the new reincarnations of the light sides... good, I can't wait to see them be torn apart from each other knowing they'll never be able to properly take their birthright as the unions leader. Of course this footage was strictly restricted from the news and anyone else, it was just for me to watch and enjoy.
Good luck boys, you're going to need it~
