Birds tweeted a sweet morning song as SoftPaw felt her siblings stirring in their new nests in the apprentice's den. SoftPaw blinked her bright green eyes open looking around. "Where's DarkPaw?" She asked noticing the black Tom wasn't in his nest.

"You know DarkPaw likes to get up before the sun rises." OakPaw muttered and shook the moss out of his fur and began to groom his fur.

MoonPaw and CloverPaw followed while SoftPaw pawed at SilverPaw. "Wake up SilverPaw, or DarkPaw will be bragging all night about how he got more done then us!" She meowed anxiously to her friend.

It was several days after they became apprentices, the five mostly learned how to get moss for the elders and learned the territory. Nothing exciting, until today.

CloverPaw gasped as she remembered their duties today. "SilverPaw wake up!! You and SoftPaw are going on your first border patrol! While we go to learn hunting for the first time today!" She meowed excitedly.

SoftPaw felt kinda left out, her siblings mostly trained together while BlueFeather would train her alone or with SilverPaw and BushWing.

MoonPaw sensing SoftPaw's mood gently nudged her in the shoulder. "Don't worry, we'll all train together soon, besides, maybe they're doing it so we don't goof off." She meowed cheerfully.

SoftPaw nodded, she was grateful BlueFeather was her mentor. Really she was, it just felt like BlueFeather didn't want the four to be together, which to SoftPaw was strange. "You're right, you guys will have to show me what your mentors taught you when we get back."

OakPaw and CloverPaw were already out of the den excited for the day, SoftPaw followed out with them and her sister and SilverPaw who was still half asleep.

"Did you not sleep last night SilverPaw?" SoftPaw asked quietly.

SilverPaw looked down embarrassed. "No, CloverPaw was kicking me in her sleep. And I kept having nightmares." He explained.

"That's CloverPaw for you," SoftPaw chuckled. "And what are your nightmares about?"

"Not becoming a Warrior. BushWing said I had a lot of work to do if I'm ever going to be a Warrior." SilverPaw explained sighing loudly.

SoftPaw felt her fur prickle with announce towards BushWing. She had always known he was ill tempered. But to say such a thing to a beginning apprentice seemed outrageous to her. "You'll make a great Warrior one day. I'm sure of it!" She meowed nudging his side. "Work hard, and if you need help, I'll help you."

SilverPaw looked at SoftPaw sheepishly and purred, "thank you SoftPaw. You're always a good friend to me."

"SoftPaw! SilverPaw! Are you a couple of logs or are you coming?" Called BushWing at the bramble bush entrance.

BlueFeather glared at BushWing annoyed but said nothing as SoftPaw and SilverPaw came looking around for DropletFur. "Where is DropletFur? I thought he was coming." SilverPaw asked first.

"SleekStorm is coming with us instead," BushWing began, "it appears something is wrong with DropletFur's muscles. He may end up retiring early."

SoftPaw and SilverPaw looked at each other in surprise and fear, surely a middle aged Warrior like DropletFur couldn't possibly retire so young.

"Don't worry, MossFur and FirePaw are doing everything they can I'm sure." SleekStorm meowed as he came to join the patrol.

The handsome Tom glanced from BushWing and BlueFeather, "BlueFeather, you're leading right?" He asked nervously.

BushWing growled, "no you mousebrain I am, since DropletFur can't I'll be taking over." He meowed and turned leaving the camp with a flick of his tail.
