The horror genre has several sub-genres, each with its own distinct characteristics.

Gothic:
✂Horror novels that focus specifically on death. Characteristics of the Gothic includes: death and decay, haunted homes/castles, family curses, madness, powerful love/romance, ghosts, and vampires. The genre is said to have become popular in the late 18th century with the publication of Horace Walpole's novel The Castle of Otranto in 1764.
Paranormal:
✂Horror novels involving ghost stories or supernatural horror events that do not exist within the context of scientific explanation.
Occult:
✂Horror novels about ritual practices that are not considered religion or science.
Used for works dealing with witchcraft, spiritualism, psychic phenomena, voodooism, etc., and for works dealing with the mysterious or secret knowledge and power supposedly attainable only through these and other magical or supernatural means.
Dark Fantasy:
✂Horror novels that blend dark elements of fantasy. Dark fantasy is defined as a fantasy sub-genre that is typified by a deliberately ominous tone, reinforcing what is commonly perceived as a “gloomy” atmosphere. Standard features of fantasy are deliberately intertwined with a sense of terror and dread to create this sinister subcategory of fantasy.
Survival Horror:
✂Horror novels in which the main character is being hunted and trying to survive within their circumstances. focuses on survival of the character as the game tries to frighten players with either horror graphics or scary ambience. Although combat can be part of the gameplay, the player is made to feel less in control than in typical action games through limited ammunition, health, speed and vision, or through various obstructions of the player's interaction with the game mechanics.
Science-Fiction Horror:
✂Is a subgenre of science fiction and horror novels, often revolving around subjects that include but are not limited to alien invasions, mad scientists, and/or experiments gone wrong.
