It is the 15th of April which also happens to be my 16th birthday. When I woke up in the morning I was greeted by a letter from my parents. It read:
Dear Rachel,
Happy birthday, darling. You are finally 16!
We will see you over the summer but until
then continue to have fun at Hogwarts.
Make sure to write us back after you open
your gifts.
Love, Mom and Dad
Next to the letter were two different sized boxes which I was guessing were my gifts. I opened the larger box first and inside was a new pair of black combat boots and a dark green tank top in a silky material.
In the other box was a dark green journal with the Slytherin crest in metallic silver and a black quill. I grabbed a sheet of paper from inside my desk and used my new quill to write a thank you letter to my parents.
I grabbed a white T-shirt from my closet and put it on with my new green top over it. Then I tucked it all into a pair of ripped, worn black jeans and put my new combat boots on. I put on silver earrings and layered a couple of necklaces. To finish off the look I put my hair into a neat bun pulling out a few pieces to frame my face.
I open the door and almost ran into Pansy who was about to walk inside.
"Watch where you're going" she growled at me.
"How was I supposed to know you were standing behind the door?"I shot back.
She just rolled her eyes at me and walked the rest of the way into the room. I continued down the hallway and into the common room. Draco was sitting on the couch with Crabbe and Goyle laughing about who knows what.
I quickly walked towards the door trying to not be noticed. I had been avoiding Draco for the last couple of weeks after seeing him with his wand held up to Neville's neck. I was still furious that he could do something like that even after knowing he was my only friend.
I rushed down the corridor and into the dining hall. I sat down at the Slytherin table alone and started to pile food onto my plate. While I was eating a piece of toast someone sat next to me. I was surprised because I always ate alone.
I turned to see Draco beside me looking straight at me. I just rolled my eyes, picked up my plate and scooted over a foot or two.
He just followed me and said, "why have you been avoiding me?"
"I haven't been avoiding you" I responded without looking up from my plate.
"Then why haven't you talked to me in the past couple of weeks?"
"It's not like we are friends or anything, why should I talk to you?"
He paused for a minute and ignored my question. He changed the subject by asking, "so why are you dressed so nicely today?"
"It happens to be my birthday today, "I replied with an irritated tone in my voice.
"Oh, so your what...16 today?"He asked with a smirk on his face.
"Yeah, why does it matter?"
He shook his head while saying, "It doesn't, just wondering."
"Right, now can you leave me alone so I can eat in peace?"
"Are you just going to spend your birthday alone?"
"No, I have plans," I said, getting even more annoyed with him.
