I finally got to my last class. It also happened to be my second favorite, Choir aka Vocal Studies.
I went to my seat, situated between Sofia and an empty desk. I crossed my arms across my chest and waited.
"Kyla-" someone tapped my shoulder and said.
"Go away. I'm sorry that I don't talk to peasants like you-" I turned around, "Oh! Ariel. Hey."
"Sorry to bother you," she said immediately, probably to my automatic response to people who ask me for answers, "but can I sit here?"
"Sure! I mean, sure. I don't really care," I said. She grinned at me. I grinned right back at her. Ariel seems cool. She's not as obnoxious as the usual people.
"So are you auditioning?" Ariel asks as she slips into her new seat.
"Yeah. U?" I ask.
"Mhm, Winter talked me into doing it before I even came here," she chuckled.
"Good ol Winter," I say as I feel someone approaching us. A nerdy kids with bad hair and horrible teeth named Alex, not to be confused with Alexandria, taps Ariel on the shoulder.
"H-h-hey Ariel," he stutters, "I'm Alex. We have ELA together." I could guess his intent from this one sentence. What, you think because she has glasses she's suddenly in your league?
"Nice to meet you Alex," she says.
"I was wondering if we could, um, study together at my house on Saturday," he says while nervously bit his fingernails. Seriously dude, studying for a date? Are you kidding me? What happened to good old movies?
Ariel's face said it all. "Sorry Alex, but I'm busy this Saturday."
"Erm, that's okay. We can hang out on Sunday or Monday or Tuesday or-," he rambles. I cut him off.
"Just go," I say. He gets the point and scrambles away.
"Thanks," Ariel says gratefully.
"No problem," I say. Then the teacher enters.
"Okay class! Settle down! Today is a challenge day. Pick a partner and choose a song to sing together in front of the class. You will have 30 minutes. Just a reminder, auditions for a Produce Group will be in the Gym right after this period," the teachers says. Like anyone could forget.
"Now go! You can use the hallways or an empty classroom to practice," he says.
Ariel immediately turns to me. "Do you want to be partners?" she asks.
"Usually I partner up with Chloe, but I'm pretty sure she's with Carlie," I look around to check, "Yup! She's with Carlie. So sure."
"Okay! Let's go to the room next door then," she says. We grabbed our backpacks and headed to the room next door. Luckily, we were early and nobody was in it.
"Yes! There's no people to kick out!" I exclaim. Ariel giggles. I grab my laptop and turn it on.
"Let's pick a song. We only have 30 minutes until we have to present it," I say getting straight to business.
"Do you have any ideas?" Ariel asks.
"Hm, are you a soprano or an alto?" I ask.
"Definitely soprano," Ariel replies.
"Well, let's see," I say trying to think of a higher song off the top of my head. I'm a soprano too so I'm not sure if our voices will blend, "Do you know One Day by Tate McRae?"
"Yes! I love that song," Ariel replies.
"Let's do it then," I say. We take about 5 minutes splitting up the verses. I start off.
The second Ariel starts singing, my jaw drops.
"Scared to meet his- what?" she says finally looking at my expression.
"Woah," is all I can manage to say. Her voice was clear, pure, high-pitched, and sounded like an angel. I was tempted to ask, "Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?" Seriously though, the girl can sing and she's gorgeous. What doesn't she have?
"Hehe," she giggles, "Let's start again." I start to sing again. When she starts singing I manage not to gape at her like an idiot. Then we sing the chorus together. I have to admit, our voices blended well together.
We were just finishing up when we heard some angry talking. It was like the people were angry, but trying to gain notice.
"Huh?" Ariel asked. I just shrugged. People are weird.
"Should we...look?" Ariel asked as the voices got a tiny bit louder. I nodded and opened the door just a tiny bit, praying it wouldn't creak. It didn't and I was shocked at what I saw.
"What do you mean you didn't mean to call Winter pretty?" Mia asked aggressively. Oo, drama. Usually, I wouldn't care about other people, but this included Winter and I wanted to see what was going on. Ariel just silently took her phone out of her pocket and pressed the record button.
"Mia I-" Dean tried to say.
"What does she have that I don't? What? Why would you choose the nerd over me? And just this morning you were all flirty! Why would you play my feelings like that? WHY?" Mia ranted.
"Mia, do you think I have a choice on whether or not I want to date you? Every time we break up, you threaten to kill yourself! And as much as I really, really, really want to break up with you, I don't want to die," Dean softly says.
"Which means you still care about me," Mia defended. I resisted the urge to go slap some sense into the girl. And this is Alex's best friend?
"And Winter seems really nice," Dean continues, "She's actually really pretty, And she's not forcing me into a relationship like YOU are."
"You call frizzy hair and frozen skin pretty?" Mia scoffed, "You must have terrible taste."
"I USED to have terrible taste. That's why I dated you in the first place. I thought you were nice, but you're as toxic as CeCe and Aubrey!" Dean spits out.
"Don't you dare talk bad about my friends. Talking about toxic, you know what Sean does to Alex and you allow it!" Mia angrily replies.
"Like I have a choice! And you give CeCe a blind eye too! And you consider her your best friend," Dean says. He took the words right out of my mouth.
"You really need to shut your mouth," Mia growls.
"You know what?" Dean abruptly says.
"What?" Mia asks.
"We're done. Forever. I'm sick and tired of you and your toxicness. And don't even start with the killing yourself BS. Because at this point, I've decided something. I'm not going to make you commit by breaking up with someone as toxic as you. You are the only one to blame if something happens t you. Now leave me alone. I'm going to finish my challenge with Tayler. I've wasted enough time with you," Dean says as he heads to the door.
"Dean wait-" Mia pleads as she starts to follow him.
"No. I'm done waiting for you to grow up," Deans says as he slams the door in her face.
And Ariel silently presses the "End Recording," button.
