Almost everyone knows the story of how, Shri Krishn killed the demon Kalyavaan with the help of Maharishi Muchukunda.
But I think a very few of them know the aftermath of this story.Lord thanked Sage Muchukunda for helping him to destroy the Kalyavaan. In return, rishi Muchukunda confessed how he was blessed to help the supreme one himself and asked Shri Krishn for his shawl.
Knowing the future, Trilokinath smiled and replied that this is not the right time to give away his shawl to him.
Furthering the conversation, Shri Krishn revealed that in his next birth, Maharishi Muchukunda would be named as Pundalik, and would be a great devotee of Narayan.
When Pundalik would complete his avatar karya, Narayan would himself gift this very shawl to him.Fast forwarding the time after the war of Mahabharat
It was time for Lord to complete the promise given to Muchukunda, it was time for the birth of Pundalik in Pandharpur.
Maharani Sri Rukmini, on the other hand refused to leave her Dwarka and go with Lord to Pandharpur.
Seeing Prabhu in this dillemma, Devarshi Narad suggested him a trick.
So on the day of Janmashtami, when Rukmini decked entire Dwarka for the celebration, she informed everyone that it would be her, with whom the lord will spend time before anyone else.As suggested by Narad, Lord broke Rukmini's heart by not spending time with and not paying any heed to the arrangements made by her.
Heartbroken and enraged, Rukmini leaves Dwarka and proceeds towards Dindiravan, a village close to Pandharpur and started with a tapasya, transforming in Devi Lakshmi and sacrificing her powers to her father, Samudra Dev.
As happy as Krishn looked to go at this extent to fulfil his duties, he himself was heartbroken and felt guilty to put his dear Shri through all of this.
Then the lord proceeded towards Dindiravan to to convince Rukmini and tell her the truth.
Not able to bear the pain, Rukmini had already given up all her divine power and hence had earased the memories of Krishn. After going through a lot of convincing, penances and taking the help of his devotees, Shri Krishn finally reunited with his Rukmini. For the well-being of all his devotees in the nearing Kaliyug, he and Rukmini, along with their Bhakt Pundalik, Sant Tukaram, Sant Namadev Mukta Bai and various others, spread the word of devotion, complete surrender and taught the world path of righteousness and devotion is the way to Lord's heart.
Seeing that even the Supreme Lord, Narayan and his divine consort Shri Lakshmi themselves had to go through all the pains for the revival of devotion and peace, the locals adressed Lord Krishn as
RUKMINIVALLABH, or the one dear to Rukmini.Pandharpur today is known as the Bhu-Vaikunth and all the praises and aartis by the devotees are sung to him under the name of Shri RukminiVallabh.
