Lily climbs out of bed and rushed over to the windowsill by the closet and watched as the shouting continued outside. With shaky hands she ran to grab the phone as she watched the man she loved for 19 years walk out her house and tried to mentally prepare for the event that was about to change her life.
She watches the garage door open and sees the 2013 Camry come into vision as clothes are being throw around and her mom shouts at the man who was supposed to keep their family together and happy. She watches the man she loves giving up on her family and drives away as her mother crumbles to her knees in front of her childhood home. She watches as her mother picks up the car keys and rushes to the car following in the direction of Lily's dad.
Lily picks up the phone and calls the only person she knew would be there for her. The one person she hasn't talked to in nearly a year but that still held her heart in his hands as he traveled the world. Her Luke.
"Hello?" The groggy voice at the other end of the phone spoke out.
"Luke? It's Lily" She whispers
"Lil? Why are you calling me" He spoke with spite evident in his tone. She closed her eyes and counted to three before talking again
"I know I shouldn't be calling you, hell I wouldn't have if it wasn't important." She replied as she looked at the time on her phone realizing it was half past 2 in the morning
"What happened?" His tone changed imminently as he sits himself up on his bed
"He left Lu and I don't think he's coming back." She finally breaks down and cries
"I don't want to hear about Toby-"He was cut off by a sob
"I'm not talking about Toby. My dad left us." She chocked out into the phone. Luke gets off his bed and rushes to his living room in attempt to find some shoes and his car keys "I know you're away on tour but I didn't- I couldn't"
"Hey baby calm down I came home for the next two weeks. I'll go over if you need me to." He spoke and tries to ignore calling her by the old pet name that just rolled off his tongue
"Yes please" she pleas and feels her heart tug a little at how much it hurt hearing him call her baby
"I'll be there soon Lil" and with that they both hung up the phone as she anticipated the wait
Lily Finn first met Luke Hemmings when she was 9 and he was 11. They met at the neighborhood park when all kids had for entertainment was playing outside and making their own fun. He noticed the small brunette on her own and invited her to play with him and the rest of the neighborhood kids. When Lily was 13 her mum gave birth to Lily's little sister Rosie, and Luke sat by her side at the hospital waiting area holding her hand. At the age of 14 she developed a huge attraction towards her best friend but she faced a major draw back when he started dating his first girlfriend and settled on being a friend, his best friend.
When she turned 15 Luke kissed her for the first time in their 6 years of friendship. They were sat in his moms car and held each other for the last night he was in Australia before moving away to London with the rest of the boys. Lily cried after Luke kissed her, she's been waiting for this moment but everything between them was about to change as she was saying goodbye to him the following morning. They stayed parked in the drive way planning how to survive without one another being right by their side where she assured him she'd always be there no matter the distance.
Months later when he came back she declared her love for him and the two ended up dating for a little over 2 years. Lily loved Luke but there was always something holding her back. Luke on the other hand was completely captivated by her, she was his whole world. As the years progressed Lily started to feel overwhelmed by Luke's career and the hate she'd gotten, it eventually lead to the two deciding to take a break for a while. When the two reconciled Lily didn't feel like she was ready to be the Luke Hemmings girlfriend. She wanted to be a regular 18 year old and get away from the limelight. Even though it hurt him to hear, he ultimately understood but the two mutually decided it'd be best if they kept their distance from one another.
Luke went about his life and wrote some heart breaking songs about the girl who captured his heart at a young age and she moved on later with a nice boy she swore she liked, a boy she wanted to love. Lily never wanted her life to stop because of heartbreak and when she found Toby she masked her pain away. Luke eventually found Arzaylea and when that didn't work out he found a lovely girl named Sierra, but Sierra was no Lily. And Toby could never be Luke.
Luke didn't know if it was because he'd known her since he was 11 or if it was the sadness in her voice that had him speeding off as if his life depended on it. Luke drove the 5 minutes from his mums house to Lily's parents house and parked in the driveway trying to prepare to see the mess that has just unfolded. He climbed out his car and not even a second after doing so he felt the oh so familiar petite figure enveloping him in a hug.
"I'm sorry Lily Pad" Luke whispered in her hair
"I'm sorry I called you. I just really needed you." Luke felt a tightening in his chest as the words left her lips "Everything is falling apart."
"Shh it's okay Lil you don't ever have to apologize for calling me." He sighed
"Mum got served with divorce papers a few days ago and dads been sleeping in the office the last few weeks. I knew things were bad but today he was leaving home."
"Did they talk to you and Rosie about this?"
"We knew about the fighting but he never told us he was leaving. I overheard when they were yelling about the divorce papers and I saw him take his things into the car. I love my dad Luke but I am so angry at him" She sobbed
"Don't worry Lil your family is strong, you don't have to forgive him right away for this but at the same time you can't force two people together" Luke scratched the back of his head awkwardly "Do you want to go inside
The two walked inside and up the stairs to Lily's room. It was an odd feeling for both of them to be in a place they spent many days and nights together. Luke looked at the cloud painted walls and felt like he was 18 again and head over heels for the beautiful girl.
"Do you want to talk more about it?" Luke asked to which Lily only shook her head no. Deciding to change the subject Luke spoke once again "It's so weird being back here"
"I haven't really changed my room much. I really hate change."Lily says and mumbles the last part a little
"I get it, nothing in my room has been changed since I left. I've only added a few pictures" He says and stares directly into a picture Lily had behind a lamp of the two of them at Lily's 9th birthday party. The two both wearing birthday hats hugging one another and Lily showing a toothless smile.
"That's always been my favourite photo of us" She sniffled whilst looking towards the direction Luke has been staring at
"Mine too" he lightly smiles "Wheres Rosie?"
"At my cousins house. Mum took her to spend the night with Ellie" she blinks away a few tears as she thinks about how her whole world is falling apart and her baby sister is probably just sleeping
"I've missed her" Luke says and turns his attention towards Lily. He walks towards her and kneels infront of her and wipes away a tear from her cheek "I've missed all of you"
"We missed you too Lukey" she leans her cheek further into his hand for comfort "I didn't realize I was calling you until you picked up the phone. I-I don't really know why I called."
"I'm sorry for being a jerk over the phone. I just hadn't expected to ever hear from you again, especially not at 2 in the morning" he admitted and looked away from her briefly as he pulled his hand away. For a few seconds he forgot about the fact that he had a girlfriend and she had a boyfriend. Luke didn't know it until he had seen her again but Lily Anne Flinn was still the keeper of his heart
"I know. I felt the same way" Lily didn't know what was happening but once she remembered about Toby all her senses were knocked back into her head and she quickly stands up. "It's kind of late"
"Right I should get going." They both stand and make their way towards the front door and as they got to Lukes car door Lily speaks once again
"I know this is dumb but do you think we can meet for lunch tomorrow?"
