The moment I cross the threshold of my office, the bell of the hotline rings. I hear one of the secretaries pick up the phone, and I have just enough time to put the files I'm holding under my arm on a small stand that he puts his head in the opening to let me know that the Queen of Italy is on the line.

"I'll take it, thank you," I say with a nod.

Sitting on the edge of the desk, I grab the handset and immediately a singing voice with a strong Italian accent calls out to me.

"Maxon, carissimo! How happy I am to finally be able to talk to you! My daughter has told me a lot about you."

"Dear Luciana, the pleasure is mine." I am a little surprised by her familiarity, but I must say that a little touch of human warmth does not hurt, especially in these times.

"I offer you my deepest condolences, caro. What a tragedy! No one should have to go through this. If there is anything I can do to help you, please let me know."

"Thank you, Luciana; to tell the truth, it's not quite real yet. I have so much to do that I hardly have time to think about it."

"I understand completely, amato. I am really sorry that we could not do more to avoid such a catastrophe! But no one could have imagined something of this extent!"

"You have already done so much for Illéa, and I am infinitely grateful to you and Nicoletta. I hope that once the situation is... calmer, we will be able to think about a real alliance between our two countries."

"But certainly! It goes without saying that I already appreciate you much more than your late father, God rest his soul! I will look into the matter as soon as possible, with the help of my advisers."

"Thank you, Luciana, you are a true angel. Anyway, I imagine we will see each other at the funeral, won't we?"

"Chiaro che se, we will come to support you and your fiancée. Poor child, I understand she has also just lost her father, it is terrible. I will advise Nicoletta to call her, she will know how to comfort her."

"I don't doubt it, dear. I am sorry, I will have to leave you, duty calls me. The palace steward will be in charge of organising your arrival in Illéa."

"Very good, Maxon. I send you all my courage, carissimo. Don't hesitate to let me know if you need anything!"

"I won't, Luciana. See you soon," I conclude.

I put the handset back on its base and let out a long sigh. Rubbing my eyelids, I think of how difficult it is for me to keep my composure in all these circumstances, this impassive mask that took me so long to learn. Talking about the death of my parents as if it were the death of a stranger weighs me down a lot, but I have to keep my composure. I was brought up to fulfill this role. Gathering my strength, I ring Seymour's bell; I need to find a personal assistant to avoid overburdening this poor man with work.

"Yes, Sir?" he asks as he enters the room.

"You can send for the doctor, I am ready. After that I would like to speak with Lady Kriss; tell her to come up here."

He nods off and slips away almost immediately, leaving me alone with my files. A noise comes to me from the adjoining rooms, where the advisors are working amid all the agitation. Eventually, I go to the bathroom next to my office and undo the buttons on my shirt for my examination.
