It was the end of their very first week at school, when Dumbledore announced that they would be hosting the tri wizard tournament. A legendary competition between wizarding schools. The room immediately went abuzz. The delegates from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang would be arriving in a few weeks, and on Halloween the names for the competition would be picked. The way in which names were to be entered would be explained when everyone had arrived.

"Are any of you going to enter?" Ernie asked Leah, Edward and Cedric who thought about it carefully.

"I might." Cedric finally decided, much to the horror of Sirius.

"Don't people die in these things?" He asked.

"They've changed since then, and in the unlikely event Cedric gets picked, they won't allow him to die." Leah explained to Sirius, who nodded.

"So what's it all about then?" From what little he knew about the tournament, he didn't really understand.

"Fame and money I think." Edward said critically. "That's all you get from it."

"And bring honour to your school." Cedric added.

"You really want to put your name down?" Ernie asked. Cedric nodded.

"I know I'll never get picked, but it's worth a shot." He told them.

"Well, we'll just have to wait and see." Justin said smartly.

"What are the other wizarding schools like?" Sirius asked, he hadn't really considered that there were other wizarding schools, of course there would be, he had just never thought about them.

"Beauxbatons is in France, apparently their castle is beautiful. They have some of the best Charms teachers in the world." Edward explained before Cedric got a chance. "Durmstrang is in the Bulgarian mountains, they say they are very good at the dark arts."

"Can you do dark arts without being evil?" Sirius wondered aloud.

"Thinking about delving into the dark arts are you Sirius?" Leah joked.

"I was just curious, because why else would they be allowed to teach it?"

"The dark arts are a tricky subject Sirius." Cedric explained. "Most wizards choose to stay away from it, theres a very fine line between an understanding of the dark arts and using the dark arts for evil. Most wizards like to have an understanding of them, but never use them."

"Magic is so complicated." Sirius sighed. "I don't know how I'm still passing."

"Its a miracle seeing as you have such a little brain." Hannah teased him, elbowing him with only a little force.

"You're so mean!" Sirius pulled a face at her.

She just laughed at him and pulled a face back.

"Happy birthday Ceddie." Sirius greeted his friend with a hug and a small box that he had had to get the houseleves to help him wrap so it looked nice.

"Sirius, you didn't have to get me anything." Cedric smiled, Edward and Leah had already gone down to breakfast, so it was just the two of them.

"Its your birthday Ced!" Sirius replied with a shrug. "You're seventeen now, you're getting old."

"Juet because you're a little baby." Cedric teased him, before carefully unwrapping the box. Inside lay a golden snitch, wings folded. Cedric's name engraved across the middle delicately. "Sirius, I love it. Thank you."

"You're welcome." Sirius smiled at him, hugging Cedric back as he gave him another hug. "Now you can practice wherever you are."

"Wow, look at that!" Sirius said excitedly, the seven of them were gathered in the corridor, watching the other schools arrive. A huge carriage pulled by seven pegasus' landed in the grounds.

"I've never seen a pegasus before." Leah exclaimed. "Oh they're so beautiful!"

"I don't know why I didn't expect them to exist." Justin agreed. "I mean, unicorns, werewolves, centaurs, why not pegasus'."

"Magic always manages to surprise." Ernie nodded.

"Yeah, hey would you look at that!" Edward interrupted himself as he noticed a huge pirate ship rising from the lake.

"That is amazing!" Cedric said with a grin, they stayed watching the students from the two other schools walk into the castle, before following them into the great hall for the evenings announcement.

"I'm kinda excited." Justin mused as they took their seats at the hufflepuff table.

"I just want to know how they're picking the names." Sirius said. "I'm going to be so disappointed if they just pull the names out of the sorting hat.

"Haha imagine." Leah snorted. "Imagine it talking about each one, like oh that girl from Beauxbaton would be a great hufflepuff."

"I bet it feels left out when whatever it is gets revealed." Justin added.

Dumbledore called them all for calm. "Let us warmly welcome our guests." He began. Filch ushered in four wizards who were carrying some sort of sculpture.

"What on earth is that meant to be?" Hannah muttered to Sirius, who shrugged. The sculpture melted away and revealed a rather large goblet.

"Is that the trophy?" Sirius asked. "How are you meant to carry that?"

"The ministry has decided to place a restriction upon entering the tournament. You must be seventeen years of age or older." Dumbledore announced. "You have until Thursday put your name into the goblet of fire. Then the participants will be picked."

"That's so soon." Leah remarked. "When are you going to do it Ced?"

"As soon as." Cedric replied. "Its worth a shot at least."

"You can but try." Ernie nodded.
