"Ced, are you sure about this." Sirius asked, the two were stood outside the door to the great hall, Sirius had a tight hold onto his hand.

"I am, this doesn't mean I'll get in, it just means I'm giving it a shot." Cedric told him, his entrance slip was in his free hand. Sirius nodded.

"I'm here for you, no matter what."

"I know." Cedric smiled at him. "I'll be right back." He let go of Sirius' hand and entered the hall. Sirius watched him go, letting out a yell as someone grabbed him and pushed him into the wall.

"Sirius, Where have you been?" It was Ollie.

"What? I went to Cedric's for the summer." Sirius told him. "Why?"

"You disappeared. You keep disappearing." Ollie told him. "Aro went berserk, you need to be careful."

"I'm fine Ollie, please get off my back." Sirius said, he wanted to see if Cedric had put his name in or not.

"Sirius-" Ollie began, but Sirius cut him off.

"Ollie please, just leave me alone." He begged.

"Sirius-" But Sirius had pushed past him and walked into the great hall. Cedric walked out of the circle and hugged him.

"It worked!" Cedric celebrated, "my names in."

"Well done Ced." Sirius held him tightly, happy for him, although he hoped desperately that Cedric wouldn't be chosen.

"Come on, I've got some snacks in my dormitory, I think the others are already up there." Cedric told him, offering the younger his hand, Sirius took it and followed him up the stairs.

"The ministry doesn't think I should show you this, but I think you need to know." Moody announced to them as he paraded back and forth at the front of the classroom. "The unforgivable curses."

Sirius' stomach flipped, he wasn't sure he would ever be able to hear the words 'crucio' without panicking, let alone watch Moody demonstrate it. The man must be mental.

"Someone give me a curse..." Moody surveyed the class before his game settled on Sirius. "Stand up. Give me a curse."

Sirius stood up shakily, Justin, who was sat beside him, watching with worried eyes. "Um, the cruciatus curse." He muttered.

"Ah, the torture curse." Moody gave him a look that said he knew that Aro had tortured him with it before, but how would he know? He picked up a spider and enlarged it, placing it on his desk so they could all see it. "Crucio!"

Seeing the spider writhing in pain made him want to throw up, Sirius closed his eyes, but he could still hear the spider's squeals of pain. Justin too had gone pale, he had seen it performed on Sirius once and it had stuck in his mind ever since.

Moody finally stopped torturing the spider. "Give me another one." He looked at the class. "Swan."

"The imperious curse." Jane replied without a stumble. Moody nodded.

"The imperious curse, takes away your free will." He nodded. "Imperio."

The spider started going wherever Moody directed, completely under his control, Sirius clutched his stomach, he had little choice in his life as it was, but to have none... He didn't think he would handle it.

"And lastly, the killing curse." Moody rounded on Sirius again. "I'm sure you're familiar with this one Potter, your brother did survive it." He looked at the spider. "Avada kedavra." A green light shot out of Moody's want and the spider was dead.

That green light. That green light was how his parents died. Quickly, without pain, but leaving two vulnerable infants. Leaving their family and friends. His parents hadn't deserved to die. They had been there and then they weren't. Death shouldn't be that simple. It shouldn't be without meaning.

"It is a crime to use such curses." Moody continued, but Sirius barely heard him, he couldn't focus, his head was full of visions of that green light, killing his parents over and over again.

"Sirius?" Cedric asked, noticing that the boy had not said a word since he had come back from Defence against the dark arts. They were sat in their corner of the common room, chatting. Cedric moved to sit beside him. "Are you alright?" Sirius just nodded, his eyes fixed on the flickering flames of the fire.

"We did unforgivable curses in defence against the dark arts." Justin explained gently. "Moody demonstrated the killing curse right in front of him."

"Oh Merlin!" Cedric ran a hand through his hair. "Sirius, do you want to talk about it?"  Sirius just shook his head. "It might make you feel better?"

"They died. Just like that." Sirius muttered. "One moment they were alive, then there was a green light. Then they died." He sighed. "It meant nothing. He... he just killed them, as easy as I'm talking to you right now."

"And if he comes back, we will stop him from ever killing anyone again, and your parents death will mean that he was stopped once and for all." Cedric said gently. He was the only one who could find the right words to say to Sirius.

"When he comes back." Sirius corrected quietly. "He's coming back."

"And this time we will stop him. Your parents death wasn't in vain and it never will be." Cedric said, he'd convinced Sirius to let him hug him, knowing he needed the comfort. "We can't change the past, but we can stop it from happening again."

Sirius nodded slowly, his eyes meeting Cedric's tears falling slowly. Cedric wiped the first few away. "Its okay to cry, isn't it guys?"

"Of course it is." Leah added with a smile. "Cry if you need to Sirius, we'll always be here for you."

"Yeah, you can't get rid of us that easily." Hannah added with a grin. "Even if you try to."

"Thank you. I... I needed that."

"We're friends, it's what we do." Ernie shrugged, but he smiled widely at his friend. "Even if you are really annoying."

"Hey! Ern!"

"Awe love ya really."
