"Thanks."I mumbled shyly as I received my mug of coffee from Lydia. She had brought me to the kitchen after finding me eaves dropping which was so embarrassing that I was looking anywhere but her. She sipped her own coffee silently. After placing away the chocolates I had given her.
"My boys are so cute, don't you think so." Of course! I was literally dating one of them.
"They are, miss. Good for you."I mumbled quietly. She smiled kindly.
"Call me Lydia, am only thirty six "well, she looked younger.
"I could disagree cause you hardly look thirty."she laughed heartily at that.
"Oh don't flatter me, am too old to blush."I smiled at that and sipped my coffee.
"When the boys were young, I always made sure they looked similar."I laughed briefly nodding.
"Carl told me some scenarios caused by that, they are quite funny."she joined me in laughter for a while as if also recalling something funny. I was glad she was a kind lady."Even their dad couldn't differentiate them, he could literally ask who is who when looking for one of them."I chuckled imagining their dad, whom I had met once as he was work alcoholic, asking who is who, it was funny.
"But they have always been so different in my eyes."she added. I could see the happiness in her eyes as they were literally shining.
"That's why I made sure they looked the same so I could keep remembering that they were twins because to me they were each other's opposites. While Carl had a bad attitude towards strangers, Jack smiled at them."I smiled on recalling how I had met them.
"Carl always loved to go out with friends and go camping with classmates or his dad, Jack loved clinging to me like I would vanish if he wasn't with me."she sighed happily.
"Of the two Carl has always been stronger but Jack has always been braver. Carl literally fears even darkness."we chuckled at that. Indeed he slept with his table lamps on and had never told me why.
"So Carl has always been the one to fight off bullies from his brother but Jack has always been the one to make sure Carl was happy and fine. Now seeing them argue about Jack's sexuality eats me up inside."there was a hint of sadness in her voice.
She places her mug in the sink and sniffed a bit before turning to me.
"You want to see their baby pictures?"I nodded almost immediately. Placing my empty mug next to hers, she motioned me to follow her and we went to their large library that had a desk by the door. She signalled me to sit in one of the chairs as she moved to one shelf that was full of albums. They sure do have lots of photos.
They had numbers on them which I concluded was her way of differentiating them, she pulled out album one.
"I was a photographer before becoming a director, if you're wondering about the many albums."she said softly as she joined me setting the album on the table so I could flip the pages myself. Which I started as she explained each photo from ultra sound to their first year. so that was why it was called one.Their pictures were so cute, they were wearing matching or similar clothes everywhere, she literally took pictures of them everywhere, first day at school, kindergarten, when they first crawled. Their Christmases. Their was an older girl in some of the pictures whom I concluded was Mady, their big sister. Their was one photo when Carl was showering, soap all over his naked tiny body smiling into the camera, I had laughed so hard. She was telling me the stories behind the pictures and I was dying of laughter, there was even one where the twins looked pissed with their cheeks huge as they pouted sitting at the dinning table, Lydia said she had denied them any more candy as they had already had alot. This seemed a happy family and I felt my heart ache for my opposite one.
Then there were very few photos for age thirteen which she explained was the year she had almost divorced her husband, that had been the second saddest year for the family. She hadn't told me the most painful year of the family but at the back of my mind I knew it was the year Mady was raped. And I felt sad that such a jolly woman had to go through such a time."Mom!"exclaimed a voice I knew too well. I looked up to see an embarrassed Carl by the door.
"You showed her my baby pics!"he exclaimed which made me chuckle. As Lydia laughed.
"You looked cute Carl especially in the shower full of soap."I laughed heartily as he became a tomato.
"You showed her that pic!"he accused his mom. Then groaned to which we laughed.
"How could I not show my dear prim how cute you were."replied Lydia and I couldn't contain in my laughter at Carl's face. I was so glad he would never see my baby pics cause unlike him, I wasn't so cute as a baby and I was fat. So noway would he see mine, anyway where would he find my mom, she had left with all of them."I am sorry I didn't tell you about Jack earlier."I mumbled as my head is rested on Carl's chest with his arm around my shoulders. We had had an early dinner as Lydia had to take a change of clothes to her husband who wouldn't be coming home that night. So we were laying in his bed.
"I understand it wasn't your secret to tell."he replied softly.
"Did you patch up?"I asked.
"We did, you know he is my best friend. Sometimes I think I wouldn't know what to do if I didn't have him."he mumbled.
"That's what twinship does to someone."I said and we laughed.
"By the way, what was dad telling you last time?"I asked. He sighed.
"That I take care of you and keep you happy and above all let you be independent." My dad was confusing, he never let his women work but with his kids it was different.
"So are you happy?"he asked and I nodded.
"Very happy and I hope you are, too."I said quietly.
"I am, thank you."he kissed my hair then we stayed silent.
