Hi!!! I can't believe this is already chapter 4... This one is longer than the rest but I hope y'all enjoy. (It's a filler chapter my dudes)
For the rest of the week Artemis didn't give me any jobs. I knew my workload would be doubled next week, and I wasn't looking forward to it. It was Saturday, and I knew that he would show up tonight. I also knew that I would be waiting for him, because I didn't want the embarrassment. I checked the time, 2:30. I groan as I slide out of bed. Artemis had needed Rileigh for some planning on a big job. Kyla had a date with her girlfriend, and so I was alone. I slipped out the back door. I was in jeans and an old band tee. It was easy enough to fit into the rush of the city. I had to walk a couple of back blocks before I got there though. My hair was naturally a shade of silver. Honestly I hated it, but I hadn't been able to find a color I wanted to dye it.
I eventually reached the street, and headed to the mall. I had a bit of money stowed away, and had promised Rileigh new books. It wasn't a hard walk, but the bustling traffic got to me pretty quickly. Eventually I slid into an alley and busted a water pipe to make my way easier. I guided the ice up the building and hooked my feet before climbing up. I let the ice melt at the end before recycling it and freezing it towards the front. Quickly I had something like a Ice skating rink, except all I had to do was flick my wrist, and I could go anywhere I wanted. I ran, and let the ice form a bridge over the alleyways in my way. I hadn't been able to do this in years.
I let the wind blow my hair behind me as I glided over the city. I knew the local hero agencies schedules like the back of my hand. It was hilarious how easily they could be evaded, even though I was obviously using my quirk illegally. The fun ended to soon as I arrived in above an alley that led into the mall. I used the ice I had left and slid down the wall. Then, I walked around the building. I walked inside like nothing had happened, and then found my way to Rileigh's favorite bookstore. I had no clue what to get her. She was a 11 year old girl, and was the most intelligent, mature, fun 11 year old I had met.
"Anielle," I hear my name to find the bookstore's owner coming towards me.
"Iriko," I say walking over to her.
"No Rileigh today?" she asks, and I nod.
"Perfect I have had some titles I thought you could surprise her with," and I let her grab my wrist and lead me to the back. It was easy to feel normal as the girl handed me a couple of books. I knew we were flirting, and I didn't mind. It let me feel like everything was easy, not like I had to meet with an assassin later, because I had assassinated the guy he was after. She smiled at me, and I knew I had missed a question while lost in thought.
"What was that?" I ask laughing slightly at myself.
"I asked if you were free later," Iriko says tucking a lock of her hair behind her ear.
Oh. Oh shit, I feel my eyes widen, and try to think of an excuse.
"Hey nevermind let's get you these books," she says blowing off her question easily.
"Ok," I say grabbing the three books I had picked. We make our way to the counter, and I set the books down before grabbing the bills to cover them and handing them over.
"I didn't think you were a reader," an unmistakable voice says from behind me. I turn to find that he had covered his scars for the most part with makeup, and by the gods had he done it well. I notice I'm staring when I hear Iriko pointedly cough.
"I get why you had to refuse now," she says eyeing the man behind me.
"I- uh- I- It's not like that," I respond.
"Not yet at least," she says raising an eyebrow.
I grab the bag she had packed away the books in and just about run out of the shop. I knew he wasn't following me, but just incase I took a couple extra turns on my way to the next store. It was a simple clothing outlet I had stumbled upon years ago, and had bought most of my clothes from since. The owners of this one weren't as open about frequent customers, but the man behind the counter still nodded to me as I walked inside.
I didn't know what to get, so I just wandered around eyeing a couple of pieces. Eventually I selected a Navy blue dress embroidered with gold constellations. The price was rather high, but I enjoyed supporting the business. I also grabbed a new set of combat boots. The man at the counter eyed the pieces and smiled at me as he calculated the price. He said it to me and I handed him what was left of my cash. He took it, gave me my receipt. and I was on my way. I check my watch and stare in surprise as I see that 3 hours had passed. I hurriedly head to the street, and catch the bus just as it leaves the stop.
I collapse into my seat and slide my phone out of my pocket. I had messages from Rileigh asking where I was. I quickly respond that I am on my way back, before settling in knowing that the bus took a detour before getting into anywhere near my neighborhood. The time flies by and eventually I hustle off the bus. I rush to the house and don't bother going around back. I raise an eyebrow at the security camera, and the lock clicks. I step inside to find Kyla standing in the foyer.
"Where have you been?" She exclaims.
"Sorry, I lost track of time," I mutter heading past her.
"Whatever," she says following me.
"So how'd your date go?" I ask changing the subject.
"It was good, Maddie sends her regards," Kyla says obviously lost in thought.
I make my way back to my room knowing everybody was at dinner.
"So when are you and Reese getting back together?" Kyla finally asks.
I drop my bags in the doorway and turn to face Kyla at the mention of my Ex-girlfriend.
"What?" she says looking at me.
"She cheated on me, used me to get in the Hunters, and almost got me killed," I exclaim.
"Yeah, but you two were meant to be," Kyla whines from behind me as I put everything away in my dresser. Setting the books on Rileigh's bed before flopping on my own.
"We're not getting back together," I say ending the conversation.
Then I look at my watch and vault upward. He was going to be here in a half-an-hour. I rush into the bathroom and groom my hair into a braid, before washing my face.
"What the hell are you doing?" Kyla asks
"Getting ready," I say before I could think twice as I rush around slipping out of my clothes and into something cleaner.
"For what?" she says before her eyes widen. "Did you finally find a new girlfriend?"
"No, I told you I'm Bi why do you keep assuming I'm lesbian," I say altering the subject.
"Whatever, so it's a guy then?" she says looking at me.
"It isn't anything, I'm just holding my end of a deal up," I say rushing out of my room before running inside and writing Rileigh a not saying I'll be out late.
"Wait, this has to do with that guy who came looking for you doesn't it," she says and I find her grinning.
"Yeah," I say in a tone close to a snarl.
Then I make my way to the upstairs door. She nods as I go outside. I know she would cover me no matter what. I freeze the water in a puddle into foot holds as I climb ont to the roof, and wait for him.Total Word Count: 1388
