15 | FIRST PROMISE

CHAPTER FIFTEEN 

ETHAN

"Those who are coming to the winter camp, please submit your permission letter by the end of this lecture, today is the last day as tomorrow you will be leaving for the camp." Mr Forbes announced before beginning his lecture. Our school had arranged the winter camp for five days and I was really looking forward to it. My entire group was going to the camp and I was more excited because Hazelnut was also coming.

I couldn't find the reason why I wanted her to come with us, but it felt good so I didn't bother to think much about it. Only Amara and I know how much time and efforts it took to convinced her to come with us for this camp. It was not like she didn't want to come but none of her friends was going except Amara and the only reason Amara was coming was because of Shane. But somehow, we both managed to convince her and it felt not less than a victory.

Lately, I caught myself thinking about Hazelnut a lot. Whenever she was around me it felt so right, so perfect. Her touch, her smile everything was making me feel in a way I never felt with anyone else before. Just the thought of seeing her happy face or talking with her was enough to bring a smile on my face. I was not able to figure out the reason why I was feeling in this way, or maybe I was but I just didn't want to.

"Ethan, Ethan bro!" Shane shook my arm bringing me out of my thoughts "Were you daydreaming or what?"

"N-no, what happened?"

"Do you have an extra pen?"

"Why do you want a pen when the lecture is about to finish?"

'We can't use mobile in the lecture so I want to pass a written note to Amara." Shane winked.

God this super cheesy couple "Here, go write your love letter for your Juliet" 'I mentally rolled my eyes.

"Thanks buddy!"

"Hey Hazelnut! I half exclaimed when I saw Hazelnut with her friends in the cafeteria and headed towards their table. "Do you have a minute? I want to talk with you." it was not like I had something important to talk with her, but her friends never gave me a good or friendly vibe so I just didn't like to talk with her in front of them.

"H-hey Ethan" she was joking around with her friends but her smile disappeared as soon as she saw me, why? "Y-yeah sure" she hesitantly agreed to talk with me somewhere else but she simultaneously looked at Noah and Sarah before leaving. I didn't waste my time in thinking about what was going on between them and just decided to ignore it.

"Yeah, let's go "I said and started walking out of the cafeteria with her.

"So, what did you want to talk Ethan" she asked while readjusting the strap of her backpack.

"Yeah Actually-" I was about to complete my sentence but someone took Hazelnut's name from my behind and cut me off. When I turned around to see who that person was, I saw Mason coming towards us.

"Hey Jessica!" why can't he leave Hazelnut alone? What is he even up to? Here I went again, getting mad on Mason without any specific reason.

"Hey Mason" Hazelnut replied.

"Are you coming to the winter camp?" he asked her.

"Yes, what about you?"

"How can I not come when you are going to be there" what the hell? Is he flirting with her now? He was really getting on my nerves with each passing second. Thank god Hazelnut didn't reply anything and just smiled at him, it was clear that she was feeling awkward. Maybe she kind of didn't want to hurt him by being rude that's why she chose to stay silent. It had not been a long time since I got to know her but one thing, I got to know about her was that sometimes she would care too much about other people's emotions and she didn't like to hurt anyone. She is so pure.

"It is going to be really fun with all the music, dance and almost everything, I am sure you will enjoy a lot and I will make sure of that!" Mason continued.

"She is going to be there with her friends, I am sure she will enjoy the camp even if you are not there Mason." I interrupted while giving him a fake smile "and how do you even know that there is going to be dance, music and everything else?"

"Seems like you keep forgetting that I am your senior, you need to work on your memory buddy" he said while putting his hand on my shoulder which I immediately shrugged it off while glaring at him. Senior my foot.

"Hazelnut, we have to go to the library, right? Let's go" I lied. I didn't know what was I thinking but Mason was really pissing me off so I just grabbed Hazelnut's wrist and started walking towards the library.

"What the fuck is wrong with you" Hazelnut stopped all of a sudden when we reached a spot where there were fewer students, removing her wrist from my tight grip. Her eyes were filled with anger, I could clearly see that. I never saw her like this, so mad, so annoyed. 

"This is your second time of dragging me like this Ethan, who gave you the right to answer him on my behalf, he was talking with me and it was not like he was insulting me or saying something bad, why do you have to be so annoyed about it and intrude in our conversation like that? I don't know the reason why you dislike Mason so much, but you can't behave like this with me!" she didn't even wait to let me say something and turned away to leave just when I grabbed her arm turning her towards me and pulled her closer to my chest, close enough to feel her warmth. I heard her gasp, her body tensing at the force.

I didn't know what was going on in my mind when I did this, I was probably out of mind, she was probably going to get super mad on me for this immature behaviour. She tried to free her arm from my grip but that just provoked me to grab it tighter "Stop Hazelnut, listen to me!" I half yelled in a cold voice "I am sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you. I don't know why I behaved like that, please forgive me." my voice suddenly turned soft.

She started getting relaxed as soon as I loosened my grip from her arm. She continued looking at the floor and didn't reply "please Hazelnut, henceforth I won't do something like this, I promise, please forgive me" I continued. Finally, she looked in my eyes, the anger I saw earlier in her eyes vanished but I could still see the hint of disappointment in those beautiful eyes.

"I probably overreacted, it's just that I don't like when someone tries to dominate or control me Ethan. I can't tolerate that, I am sorry" she said in low voice.

"Hey hey, you don't need to be sorry, it was all my fault, I am really sorry" I said while tucking her hair behind her ear, trying to make her feel better "do you forgive me?"

"Yes" she nodded.

"I promise I will never do something like this again. Pinky promise!" I smiled while offering my little finger.

"Promises are meant to be kept; I hope you know that" she laughed while locking her little finger with mine. Finally! She laughed! Mission accomplished.

"Yes ma'am, I am aware" I chuckled and that was how I finally made her laugh and made my first promise to her and to myself as well, that I would never break the promise I made to her and I would never hurt her. For some reason, I wanted to be the reason for her joy, I wanted to see her happy. I didn't want to see her getting hurt from anyone or anything. "Just keep smiling like this Hazelnut, you look more beautiful when you do."
